AW HOSTILES

To be darksided is to go the darkside of abandonware, whereupon you no longer really support abandonware or the many other alternative ways to keep it in circulation.  You secretly  believe everything is warez and wish to undermine all abandonware efforts.  In addition, you usually have a huge ego when it comes to your own self-importance. You think you can do everything better and through brute force and corruption you impose your twisted will on others.

CHARLES BROAM "DECLARES WAR"

August 22, 2009

I am currently being harassed by a Charles J Broam, age 35-39.  He has threatened to steal the content of this website.  He came to me in the guise of trying to help, but he's done nothing but bitch and complain about the makeup of the website in email after endless email.

He recently said he was "declaring war" on me, so I think it's best to mention this publicly before he does something stupid or criminal.  Quote: "
Cuz I can steal all your links, make a much better website, and steal all your visitors. Obviously you cannot take any constructive criticism. So fine then, if WAR is was you want, that's what you'll get."

At one point he even begged me for money, at length.  I couldn't believe it.

If you are a real web developer and wish to help with this site pro bono, please do not take this approach with me.  This guy has done nothing but waste my time.  If you find yourself in contact with him yourself, do not trust him.  He's just trying to scam you and/or waste your time.

Chasm - The Rift

"Thanks to the Internet and the multiplayer mania that's been sweeping the world, Quake has become more of a phenomenon now than a computer game. But those same fragfest junkies who live and die by the happenings on QuakeWorld would also be the first to admit that the game's single-player aspect is less than intriguing. For less than $30, Chasm: The Rift provides gamers with crisp SVGA graphics and effects without the need for a 3D accelerator, a true-3D polygon-based game engine, and enough environmental interaction and gameplay innovations to make some of the industry big boys stop and take notice. It may not be as cutting-edge as those "other" 3D games, and it does have its problems, but Chasm: The Rift offers an involving and fun single-player game in an age where multiplayer is king." --Avault

"Chasm: The Rift was released one year after Quake, and that is probably the main reason why it wasn't very successful. Many people call it a "poor-man's Quake," and to be honest, in some aspects the game does look like a modest brother of Quake. If the developer, Action Forms Ltd., had been able to release the game about a year earlier, it would have received more attention, as it has some interesting aspects of gameplay that were quite innovative at the time." --Abandonia

Central Intelligence

"A strategic game of espionage and undercover operations with a lot of political undertones. You play a CIA chief sent to the island of Sao Madrigal, which is currently under a dictatorship. This dictatorship is supported by the Chinese government and it seriously jeopardizes the U.S.A.'s interests on the region, thus it is your mission to organize the recuperation of democracy, by any means necessary.

You have at your disposal a series of CIA agents divided in three branches: Political, Propaganda and Military. But the object of the game is not to organize a military uprising, but instead to support and organize the island's many opposing factions (like angry students, guerrillas, political parties, etc.) against the dictatorship (with or without their knowledge of your interventions) via propaganda, bribes, subterfuge, assassinations, blackmails, etc." --Moby Games

Time Streamer Thread

The "final" version of Time Streamer (1.1) is completed.

Bonus C2C radio clip

Time Streamer may remind you of a BBS style door game from the late 80's, early 90's. Playing through the game takes about 1-2 hours.  The game is inspired around the story/myth of John Titor (a time traveler) who supposedly came to this world timeline to obtain an IBM 5100 for his world timeline in 2036.

Time Streamer features:

- Fully Randomized Combat System with Random Enemy Encounters
- Sound Effects
- RPG style Level Gains (/w new skills each level; 6 skills total, 8 levels total)
- ANSI style color graphics
- Sci-Fi storyline with some humorous undertones
- Selectable Weapons and "Shrines"
- NPCs (you can interact with/talk to)
- Randomized powerup/drop system
- Overall, what I might call a fairly advanced "text-based tactical engine"

Some Curious Facts:
  • Time Streamer is probably the most elaborate batch scripting game ever made.
  • Time Streamer is the first game to ever use the John Titor story as a basis for a game.
  • Over 660 downloads since March 01 2008.

Time Maniac

This is a Jagged Alliance Deadly Games campaign that takes place in the "Time Streamer" universe from the "Time Maniac's" perspective.

Status:  Incomplete. May be scrapped if there are serious compatibility issues with XP or other bothersome issues with modding.

Untitled Shooter

This an unfinished game originally written in Quick Basic.  It's one of the first games I nearly completed before 'the great soul crushing journey of life'.

It will probably be released first  in its Quick Basic executable form.

Status: 90% complete

Screenshot below:

But I'm considering converting into FreeBASIC, as a final project.   If that happens,  the goal is for it to have gamepad support, enhanced music and FX support,  improved gameplay mechanics, improved graphics, and a storyline.

'Robots' artificial life simulator

This is a program using neuronal networks and evolutionary computing.   Though I did NOT program this, I did write the english documentation for it.  I'm including it here because Dexterus has seemingly abandoned the project and never released it with my documentation.  A DirectX version is also included in the archive, though it may not work on newer computers.   Keep in mind this is not a game, but a simulation in which you can change certain variables and watch to see what happens.

'Spoof Games'

These may be worth a chucke or two.  Don't expect anything from them, as they're not really games at all.  They simply chronicle a bit of my early / current practice work in Flash.  So again, don't get too excited.

Note: new versions may go up from time to time.

About this Site

The goal of ISO Art - Lost in Cyberspace is to provide a compendium of games and utilities that are no longer for sale.  In that spirit, we try to provide links to where these ISOs can be obtained when legal to do so.  We do not host any of these files ourselves, unless they've been officially granted a freeware license.  Our list is for information purposes, and we do not condone the downloading of files that may be subject to copyright violations in your country.  In fact, we strive to make sure this site and the corresponding listing is fully legal with international copyright laws. Although we appreciate the efforts of abandonware sites, we have opted only to link to works that are legally grounded.  We have no real connection with the sites listed here anymore than a meta search engines has such a connection.  If you're concerned about a possible copyright or IP infringement contact the sites directly, but also let us know about any violating links so we can remove them immediately.  We will assist you in anyway we can.

We believe that abandoned software should be preserved as it was originally presented or sold, with a complete digital snapshot of what it was, including all animations, music, and sound.  We seek to make sure this software does not fall into "unobtainable status."
But unfortunately due to draconian copyright law this is often not something we can legally pursue.

If you'd like to see our list updated, contact us with relevant information.  Please report any errors, or unavailable entries as well.  Keep in mind, this listing won't truly expand without your help.

Please Donate to the Future of ISO Art

As you may be able to tell, we are passionate about keeping this project going. There's obviously a lot of room for improvement, and we hope that we will be able to do so.  We can always use your support, whether it's pointing out an error or uploading a rare ISO.  But in order for this site to improve we unfortunately also need money. As awkward as it feels to me, recently I decided to accept donations and place ads.  This site is still very small and has always faced resistence, but I'm counting on user interest to prevail.  You may not be able to donate personally, or have other reasons, but there is one thing that would really help and it costs nothing.   All you have to do is tell people about this site.  I've not promoted it much at all.   So if you can, please tell others about this site.  The more people that are involved - either downloading or contributing -  the better.  Growth means more options for everyone.   Wouldn't it be nice to have 500 entries anyone in the world can access?  How about a 1,000?  If we grow, we can do this and more.

Nonetheless - If you like the work we are doing here, and would like us to continue, please donate to our cause.   Your donation will go strictly toward upgrading the site and addressing any costs associated with it.  All donations will be recognized on the main page.  If you don't want credit for some reason, or have special instructions, let us know in the paypal 'optional comments' or an email.  Thank you.

Video games 'can improve vision'

POSTED Sunday, 29 March 2009 00:01 UK
Who says it's bad for your eyes

Playing action video games can boost an aspect of adult vision previously thought to be fixed, a US study shows.

Researchers found playing the games improved the ability to notice even very small changes in shades of grey against a uniform background.

"Contrast sensitivity" is important in situations such as driving at night, or in conditions of poor visibility.

The Nature Neuroscience study raises the possibility of using a video game training regime to improve vision.

Contrast sensitivity is often one of the first aspects of vision to be affected by ageing.

There is some evidence that the visual system can learn
John Sloper
Moorfields Eye Hospital

It can also be affected by conditions such as amblyopia, known as "lazy eye".

Improving contrast sensitivity usually requires physical changes in eye optics, through eye surgery, glasses or contact lenses.

A team from the University of Rochester studied expert video game players playing games involving aiming and shooting at virtual targets.

They found that they had better contrast sensitivity when compared with players who played non-action video games.

These results were not because people with better contrast sensitivity were more likely to be action video game players - giving non-video game players intensive daily practice in video game playing improved this group's performance on tests of contrast sensitivity.

Crucially, the improvements in this study were sustained for months or even years in some cases, suggesting that time spent in front of a computer screen is not necessarily harmful for vision, as has sometimes been suggested.

Unpredictable events

Lead researcher Dr Daphne Bavelier said it was likely that several aspects of playing video games combined to produce the beneficial effect.

The games immersed players in an environment where they had to be constantly ready to react to unpredictable events, and where visual information had to be responded to instantly in very precise physical ways.

In addition, the mere fact that the games were stimulating and rewarding should not be overlooked.

Dr Bavelier hopes to make use of the discovery to develop new ways to treat amblyopia.

The hope is that by using video games researchers can encourage the two eyes to work together, and restore the stereo vision which is lacking in people with a lazy eye.

Professor Gary Rubin, of the University College London Institute of Ophthalmology, said he was surprised by the findings.

He said other work had shown that it was possible to train people to improve some aspects of their vision - for instance, to widen the visual field.

But he said: "Contrast sensitivity is a very basic visual function, and usually they are more difficult to alter in adulthood.

"This is a small study, showing a small effect, but it was carefully done, and merits further investigation."

John Sloper, a consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, said other researchers were also examining the potential for using video games to treat amblyopia.

He said: "There is some evidence that the visual system can learn."

Report: The under-30 gaming crowd is spoiled

POSTED 2:49 p.m. MCT,
July 26, 2007

Eyeball City, Utopia (AP) --
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "asteroids" and the graphics sucked! Your guy was a
little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

Study: Surgeons who play video games more skilled

POSTED: 4:03 p.m. EST, February 19, 2007

CHICAGO, Illinois (Reuters) -- Playing video games appears to help surgeons with skills that truly count: how well they operate using a precise technique, a study said Monday.

There was a strong correlation between video game skills and a surgeon's capabilities performing laparoscopic surgery in the study published in the February issue of Archives of Surgery.

Laparoscopy and related surgeries involve manipulating instruments through a small incision or body opening where the surgeon's movements are guided by watching a television screen.

Video game skills translated into higher scores on a day-and-half-long surgical skills test, and the correlation was much higher than the surgeon's length of training or prior experience in laparoscopic surgery, the study said.

Out of 33 surgeons from Beth Israel Medical Center in New York that participated in the study, the nine doctors who had at some point played video games at least three hours per week made 37 percent fewer errors, performed 27 percent faster, and scored 42 percent better in the test of surgical skills than the 15 surgeons who had never played video games before.

"It was surprising that past commercial video game play was such a strong predictor of advanced surgical skills," said Iowa State University psychology professor Douglas Gentile, one of the study's authors.

It supports previous research that video games can improve "fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, visual attention, depth perception and computer competency," the study said.

"Video games may be a practical teaching tool to help train surgeons," senior author Dr. James Rosser of Beth Israel said.

While surgeons may benefit from playing video games, the study did not give parents a pass if their children play the games for hours on end.

A 2004 survey by Gentile found 94 percent of adolescents play video games for an average of nine hours a week. Game-playing has been linked to aggressiveness, poor school grades and can become a substitute for exercise.

"Parents should not see this study as beneficial if their child is playing video games for over an hour a day," Gentile said. "Spending that much time playing video games is not going to help their child's chances of getting into medical school."

FYI: some links appearing on GoG.com may go down soon in order to keep everything listed here as true abandonware.    I don't personally believe buying a digital copy is the same as buying a physical copy, but what can you do?  This seems to be the way most abandonware sites are going at this time.

November 09, 2009

Hello there!  This site never really dies, don't worry, it's immortal. With the holiday season, I can't say when updates will start again, but they will.   My apologies to Bob-Satan and Ampee who had new entries for you all.   I'm sure Ermuli has new stuff as well.

I've recently made the contact page more functional.  You can just send an email to me through the server without having to deal with an email client of your own.   Be sure to include your email address if you want a reply.

I deleted quite a few old news items that aren't important anymore. A trim was over due.

Bakkelun from the abandonware ring was amused by the "The under-30 gaming crowd is spoiled" blurb in ISO Newswire item back on 2009-09-02:

So true, even though I wasn't born when the original 2600 came out - I was more of a NES and C64/Amiga-kid back in those days, but I still have great respect and understanding for those whose been in "this business" for longer than I have. So kids, "stay a while and listen" next time your enthustiastic dad, uncle or perhaps even grand dad/mother wants to tell you about how they had it back in the "dark ages" of gaming - You *will* learn alot!

Heh.   :)

I'm probably going to be making some modifications to the site before the year ends.   You probably won't notice any major differences.

Quite awhile back Jorpho (from hotud.org) pointed out that the ESA MEMBERS list is out of date.   It still is!  ;)

I'm moving back to Canada in a couple of weeks.

I've been recording some of my guitar compositions.  If you want to hear them, go or click here.   Ok, let me put it this way:  I would like you to hear them.  :P

I went ahead and paid for hosting for the next 3 months because the site is about to run out of bandwitdh and wouldn't make it till the end of the month.  We have 600GB of bandwidth for the time being.  Though I threw in few bucks myself, you should thank our anonymous donor from Denmark first.

I may or may not be keeping this host, as there are a couple of other options I'm looking at.   So far I'm not that impressed with the cost and the fact that the webhosts ads are still taking up room on the site pages.

April 26, 2009

I'd like to sincerely thank the anonymous donor from Denmark. Due to lack of updating I feel I don't really deserve it.  But it's the 'kick in the pants' I need.  So, expect some updates sooner rather than later.  ;)  Also, it's always been my intention to improve the hosting.

I'm still passively looking for someone that can aid me in working on the site a regular basis, that isn't going to give me a lot of grief, and can also teach me a thing or two.   But I will still do it on my own regardless.  :P

Hope everyone has a lovely spring.  Let's all try and keep those ISOs alive and growing.
