7th Guest

"The 7th Guest is a haunted house puzzle-adventure which takes place inside an abandoned mansion. Venture into the 22 rooms of the spooky mansion, solve over 20 mind-bending puzzles to unravel a tale of revenge and horror that took place in the 1930s."

"The game is played in first person perspective with a point-and-click interface featuring horror-themed animated cursors (skeletons, bulging-eye skulls etc.). It is one of the first games to be released on the then "new" CD-Rom media. The graphics are fully rendered in SVGA, and real actors and actresses bring the story to life during numerous full-motion video cut scenes. The visuals are accompanied by an original, orchestrated musical score." --Moby Games

3 Skulls of the Toltecs

"3 Skulls of Toltecs is a decent cartoon adventure from media giant Warner Interactive that was curiously pulled even before it hit most store shelves for some unknown reason. In this frontier adventure, you're on a quest to find the 3 golden skulls of ancient Toltecs that reportedly point the way to their hidden treasure. Puzzles, while not inventive, are logical in this straightforward adventure. Recommended for those new to the adventure genre." --Underdogs

11th Hour

"The 11th Hour is the sequel to the widely successful game, The 7th Guest. It utilizes a much improved video compression engine by Graeme Devine and is also the game which brought forth Trilobyte's eventual demise.

This time you play the role of Carl Denning, boyfriend to the reporter Robin Morales. Robin has mysteriously vanished while trying to delve into the secrets of the rotting mansion of the once evil mastermind, Henry Stauf.

The game features new puzzles, redone graphics and indeed an improved engine - much smoother, with 16 bit graphics and an entirely new soundtrack." --Moby Games

Ace Ventura

""Ace Ventura" is based on the Jim Carrey movie with the same title. You play an animal-detective, who helps animals in trouble. The game resembles "Leisure Suit Larry" in the way it treats adult material: there's no explicit nudity or pornographic scenes, but the dialogues, the jokes, the actions and the thoughts of the animal-loving hero go certainly in this direction.

Travel from Alaska via the magic land Vulcania to Bavaria in this comic adventure, that also contains some action elements. " --Moby Games

Albion

"Albion is a severely underrated RPG from the makers of two Thalion hits Amberstar and Ambermoon, which became instant hits on the Amiga but unknown on the PC.The game shines with a richly detailed story, a huge and well-realized gameworld, a novel use of both 2D and 3D views, and some unique puzzles that are a far cry from the normal find-a-button-to-open-door puzzles found in most RPGs. As Tom Driscoll, a pilot who crash-landed on the exotic planet of Albion, you will make many friends and foes in your quest to find the mothership Toronto. The game is truly an epic adventure that spans vast areas and cities, all of which are teeming with colorful characters who always seem to have something to say. Puzzles are adventure-game style (i.e. use items from your inventory) mixed with standard find-secret-door-and-avoid-traps puzzles. None of them is dull, however, because each building and dungeon you enter is so well detailed and differentiated from each other, that exploration is never boring. With great graphics, fun 3D combat sequences, and a truly epic and captivating plot that could make a real novel, Albion is simply a must-have for all scifi & fantasy RPG fans. Highly recommended, especially to fans of Wizardry games." --Underdogs

Alien Incident

"A very traditional 2D point'n'click adventure game. Includes lots of funny Star Wars references.

You play the role of a teenager called Benjamin who's visiting his uncle's house at Halloween. His uncle, a home-grown scientist, attempts to activate his latest invention, the wormhole spawner. Amazingly enough, it works and rips open a wormhole to another galaxy, transporting an alien spacecraft to Earth. The aliens kidnap your uncle and, surprisingly, your mission is to rescue him (and the world, but you knew that already)." --Moby Games

Alien Legacy

"Designed by Joe Ybarra, designer of the classic Starflight games, Alien Legacy is an excellent space strategy game with a good dose of adventure and action elements thrown in.

In the tradition of Starflight, explore and build new colonies on distant planets while researching alien technologies. The cliche plot at the start soon evolves into an interesting mix of alien espionage, mysteries, and intergalactic conflicts. A solid game (although not a classic that Starflight is) that was severely underrated and underhyped, and light-years better than the its overhyped cousin Outpost :)" --Underdogs

Alien Odyssey

"Alien Odyssey is a fun but little-known multi-type action game by Argonaut Software that is similar to Cyberia in concept: it's got action, flight sim, adventure, and Full Motion Video (FMV) sequences all rolled into one entertaining CD. The game casts you as Psaph Abal, a member of a future race whose craft is stranded upon a distant planet. As you emerge from the wreck, you encounter a strange alien being chased by some evil-looking robots. Sensing that the robots are the bad guys, you hop on a speed bike and begin blasting the robots with your laser pistol, while chasing the alien to rescue him....

The bike chase through the forest is a lot of fun, although it's a "rail shooter" sequence (think Rebel Assault) that restricts your movement to merely moving crosshairs and firing on the baddies. However, the great graphics and good variety make this a fun part: the path you take is never the same, and there are countless movie clips to discover. Too bad the subsequent sections of the game aren't as well-made, although they are still interesting enough to hold my interest. The 3D portion of the game includes adventure-style puzzle-solving, interspersed with real-time combat sequences to keep things exciting, and the driving portion toward the end reminds me of Descent minus 360-degree freedom of movement." --Underdogs

Alien Trilogy

"Alien Trilogy is a first-person shooter based on the first three Alien movies. You control Lt. Ripley in three sections, each based on one film: The colony complex on LV426 (from Aliens), the prison planet (from Alien³) and the derelict spaceship (from Alien). Each section consists of about 10 missions. In every mission, certain goals must be accomplished to continue. These include killing a certain number of enemies, finding items or activating switches.

Enemies include everything the Alien life cycle provides: facehuggers, chestbursters, warrior aliens, dog aliens (from Alien³) and Alien queens, one of which waits in the final mission of every section. In addition to the Aliens, you also have to fight employees of the Company, who have either been infected by the Aliens and are beyond saving or who actively want to obstruct your mission.

Weapons to be used include pistol, shotgun, pulse rifle, flame thrower and smart gun. Ammunition, health upgrades and other useful items are scattered throughout the levels. Hidden areas may be uncovered by using explosives like grenades and seismic charges. An auto mapping system helps in not getting lost, night goggles and shoulder lamps (running on battery power) allow you to see in the dark and the motion tracker tells you where your enemies are - but only if they are moving." --Moby Games

Alone in the Dark 1
and
Alone in the Dark 2

"One of the main reasons for the timeless appeal of the classic is the music and sounds. The CD is not crammed with B movie acting excerpts and almost unnoticeable ambient tunes; instead we get classically orchestrated themes, with some genuinely unnerving discords struck throughout. That is, AITD features good music, not just scary music. The opening theme is particularly powerful, and worthy of listening to directly off the CD. " --Honest Gamers

Amber: Journeys Beyond

"If I haven't made clear already, let me say it again: I *don't* like Myst and the clones of lifeless worlds it inspired. Myst to me is just a pretty collection of puzzles that don't deserve to be called an "adventure game". Now, Amber , however, is one of the few Myst-like games I truly enjoy. From the captivating opening (resolving the mysterious hauntings to aid your unconscious friend) the game will draw you into its world. What it lacks in longevity and challenge, it more than makes up for with atmosphere and great story. A must have for anyone craving a good narrative." --Underdogs

Ambush at Sorinor

"Ambush at Sorinor is an improved sequel to Siege with a lot of needed improvements such as campaign mode and better unit variety. Athough it's just a string of all missions played in consecutive order, the campaign mode is interesting and actually tells a coherent fantasy story.

Gameplay is still limited to tactical combat, where you are either a defender or an attacker. Instead of commanding a set number of units as in Siege, here you hire a number of mercenaries with your available funds and deploy them on the map. The type of mercenary available for hire depends on the type of mission taken, thereby ensuring that each mission will be refreshing and require different tactics to succeed." --Underdogs

"I am Sly Boots, a private investigator whose office is on an artificial planet called Anachronox, somewhere in the middle of the universe. Currently, an angry client is beating me up... Right, I forgot again about that little debt of mine... No big deal. But my secretary Fatima reminds me I should better get a job. Okay, okay... I'll just walk around, talk to people, and find something. What's that? A mysterious rich man wants me to find some artifact for him? Great! That looks like a simple PI job. What can possibly go wrong?

And so, the tale of Anachronox begins. Together with his friends, Sly Boots will discover a great mystery and prevent the destruction of the universe. Set in a futuristic world, the game is a console-style RPG for the PC, that also contains elements of a humorous adventure á la Space Quest. Controlling Sly and six other party members, you'll explore many planets, and fight enemies in Final Fantasy style battles - a mixture of real time and turn-based combat. Battle Realms

"Winter of the Wolf is a stand-alone expansion to Battle Realms, so it doesn't require that players own the original game. The expansion adds new structures, units, and heroes for each of Battle Realms' four clans. It has 12 single-player campaigns and 30 multiplayer maps.

The prequel's 12 new scenarios take place seven years before the events depicted in the original game, and they reveal how the Wolf clan, one of the game's four playable factions, rose from slavery under the Lotus clan." --Moby Games

"Battle Realms is a fantasy real-time strategy innovation inspired by kung-fu movies and Japanese mythology. Players assume the role of the hero Kenji as they develop a village of peasants into a clan of highly specialized warriors. They must defend their village against barbarians, evil magicians and deadly ninja. Battle Realms puts the focus of gameplay on the battlefield and features detailed 3D environments, realistic weather effects and a unique battle gear system to advance the abilities of your warriors." --Moby Games

Bedlam

"Bedlam is a fun Space Invaders-style vertical shooter that packs a lot of gameplay variety in less than 200KB of space.Although the 4-color CGA graphics unfortunately looks too pale compared to the colorful Spectrum version, the fun gameplay remains intact. The gameplay is simple: shoot wave after wave of alien ships that fly from the top of the screen. You also have to watch out for shooting gun terrets on the deck of motherships and starbases. Fast, fun, and highly playable - the way a good shooter should be. Too bad the levels are largely repetitive and the enemy ships look too much alike to keep your attention for long."  --Underdogs

When Robert Foster's Gap-dwelling tribe is killed by soldiers from Union City who capture him, everything changes for him. After a narrow escape from the helicopter bringing him there as it inexplicably crashes, Robert and his droid Joey must search the decaying city, attempting to befriend both the snobby rich and the frustrated poor as the two attempt to get out of the city, but in the middle of everything they uncover the dark truth about LINC, the bizarre computer which makes the city tick.

Using the then revolutionary Virtual Theatre engine, BASS' characters can move freely independent of the player, allowing the game world to be much more dynamic than anything seen before (other than Virtual Theatre's debut game, the less popular Lure of the Temptress). Otherwise, the engine provides tried and true point-and-click adventure gameplay." --Moby Games

Bermuda Syndrome

"You're a pilot of a B-17 bomber in 2nd World War. After you're shot down by German fighters, you crash land through some sort of time hole in a strange world, where both dinosaurs and humans live. The first thing you have to do is save a princess; she's your companion throughout the game.

The game itself is a mixture of jump and run and adventure; on most screens you have to think and watch first before you do anything." --Moby Games

"A very violent 3D one-on-one fighter. Take control of one of many well-designed bionically-enhanced fighters, and fight in a dangerous interactive 3D environment.

Most of the characters rely on distance attacks, which reduces the game to strategic fighting rather than a boxing match; interacting with the incredibly hazardous environment adds another dimension to the gameplay- while avoiding an opponent's gunfire by jetting off with your jetpack, you may just slam right into a buzzsaw coming out of the wall." --Moby Games

BioForge

"In the far future, a fanatical group of religious extremists known as the Mondites have begun a campaign of galactic conquest. Lead by the seriously whacked-out Prime Paragon, the Mondites believe in the evolution of man through machine by cybernetic implants. Unfortunately everyone they've applied their theory to so far has ended up either dead or insane. Until you came along.

You are a prisoner in a Mondite complex with no memory of your former life. Your body has been turned into a hideous cybernetic nightmare by the evil Dr. Mastaba. The Mondites have discovered a long dead alien civilization of unimaginable power. And to make matters worse one of the aliens was accidentally revived from its tomb and is now running rampant throughout the complex.

Bioforge is an action-adventure game similar to Alone in the Dark. It features polygonal characters over pre-rendered backgrounds, and 3D Tekken-ish combat." --Moby Games

Blade Runner

"The game is based on the famous movie bearing the same title. In the grim world of the future, cities lie in darkness, and nature gave its way to artificial, bio-mechanical production of all creatures - including human beings. Those "artificial humans" are called replicants, and are treated as servants unworthy of being "true" humans. You play the role of police officer McCoy, a Blade Runner, whose special job is to hunt down replicant rebels. But during your investigations, you also get to see their side, and your vision of the world and society begins to change...

"Blade Runner" is an adventure game with an emphasis on detective work rather than on puzzles. There are very few "real" puzzles in the game, and the gameplay mainly consists of questioning suspects, gathering evidence, etc. There are also some action sequences, and throughout the game you have the ability to use your gun. Your decisions can (and will) influence the outcome of the story, bringing the game to one of the six possible endings." --Moby Games

Blood

"You are a feared gunslinger, until you attempt to help a woman whose life has been destroyed by a mysterious Cabal. You too are sucked in and killed; when resurrected you are out for revenge.

Ken Silverman's Build engine is the basis for what was possibly the goriest first-person shooter ever made up to this time. The environment is fully interactive, with moving floors and active vehicles. Destruction of landscapes is possible, and bullet holes being left by misplaced shots. The Build engine is 2.5D, so there are rooms above rooms and puzzles which are based on this.

People explode violently when taken out, to the point that you can use a zombie's head like a football. Impaled victims can be found lying around, and people die in different ways depending on how they are attacked and in which part of their body." --Moby Games

Ransom Stark became stricken with Hopkins-Brie Ontology Syndrome whilst working at TransTechnicals, due to his forced extended exposure to Cyberspace while he worked there. Blue Force

"Unarguably the best game from the group of renegade ex-Sierra employees that made up Tsunami, Blue Force is an excellent police adventure by none other than Jim Walls, of Police Quest fame. Despite easy puzzles, hackneyed dialogues, and a cliche plot, the game features a great interface, charming characters and graphics, and lots of optional points. Help rookie Jake Ryan on investigations that will shed light on his parents' mysterious death. It's much easier than Walls' Police Quest games, but it's still a great adventure that will particularly appeal to beginners. Much better than overhyped Police Quest 4 (which was not designed by Walls) at least. Two thumbs up!"

Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space

"Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space is a highly innovative computer game which was written shortly after the breakup of the Soviet Union.  It's a simulation of the US-Soviet Space Race.  This is a game for one or two players; you choose one of the two superpowers, head that country's space program, and try to beat your opponent to the Moon.

The game has a lot of wonderful features, including a whole range of different ways to get to the Moon.  You can follow in NASA's footsteps and fly Apollo, or try the Soviet strategy of sending up a Soyuz capsule on their ill-fated N1 moon rocket.  You could even fly a Gemini to the Moon--a proposal that NASA eventually rejected in favor of Apollo.  Alternatively, you might decide we were wrong to get away from the idea of reusable spacecraft, and put NASA back on track toward an early type of Space Shuttle.  Or you might even take the science-fiction-inspired Direct Ascent approach with one big capsule that does it all!  Not enough variety?  How about a Soviet scheme to land an entire Soyuz capsule on the Moon?"

"Unfortunately BARIS is a fairly difficult game--some would say too difficult (I get into that in my Tips and Background, or you can read the reviews below).  But it still holds endless fascination and playability for those of us who are space-obsessed.  The game was originally published in 1992 on floppy disk.  A year later, it was re-released in an Extended CD-ROM version, which included much better movies, and several small improvements that made it a bit easier, especially for the American player." --http://www.geocities.com/raceintospace/

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

"Arguably the closest RPG for the PC to ever rival console classic Legend of Zelda in gameplay and sheer addictiveness, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain from Stormfront Studios/Crystal Dynamics is highly underrated game that sold moderately well on the 3DO system, but poorly on the PC (which was published by Activision). Which is a shame, because Legacy of Kain is in all respects a true classic, and one that is much better than its overhyped sequel Soul Reaver."

"There's not a huge amount of character interaction in the game, but this is not a big downside considering that the game's focus is on action and physical puzzles. One cool feature is that you can disguise yourself as a mortal and try to speak to the NPCs, but usually they just give some completely useless piece of information. Your quest progresses linearly - you can't kill the Guardians in any order - you have to follow a specific path. Still, you do have enough freedom, and there are many subplots (which mostly hinge on finding powerful items) to pursue. What is a shame is that you can't save your game whenever you want-- instead, you have to wait until you come across "save posts." Despite this console system-style flaw, Legacy of Kain excels in practically every other department, and its wonderful atmosphere and near-flawless gameplay will keep you hooked into the wee hours of the morning. A must-have for every RPG or action fan, and a true classic." --Underdogs

Caesar

"The first in the strategy series set in the Roman Empire’s peak era starts off with you as ruler of a small province, although if you’re successful you will get tougher assignments.

You must build the city, placing crucial features such as housing estates, roads, policing, water supply, social events and the like. You’re not restricted to one city – you can build another area, linked by roads, once you’ve got the first one running smoothly. You have slaves at your disposal to build and maintain everything. " --Moby Games

Caesar III

"Caesar III is a city building game, in which you place building and lay out zones. You are in charge of a small province, and hope to make it as peaceful and prosperous as possible, following the advice of your citizens to make it work. The game also features defending your city, by forming an army. and for trade, but you never leave your city. You must pay attention to the Gods, who can inflict disasters if not satisfied. As the game progresses, new technologies become available, which you must allow for.

It is about people and systems. Each building that you build requires you to hire people; people that you see walking the streets of your town. The marketplace needs saleswomen, and buyers. You see the buyers walk to your granary to buy food, which they then bring back to granary. The sales lady walks up the street selling food to the houses she finds, which allows them to evolve to better housing, which pay higher taxes. The people in this game make the difference. Instead of a police station having a radius of effectiveness, it sends out a police officer who can only fight crime and fires he sees. The need to rely on randomly walking citizens, means placement of buildings is as significant as in Serf City/The Settlers." --Moby Games

Cannon Fodder

"Guide a team of up to four soldiers through 72 levels of combat in this innovative top-down action/strategy hybrid, best thought of as Lemmings crossed with Commando crossed with Dune 2. The characters are controlled indirectly using the mouse, as you activate each soldier or group of them by highlighting them, click the left button to move them to a particular spot, and the right button for them to fire guns at an enemy.

You can also pick up grenades, which can be used to destroy groups of enemies or buildings. Each mission has a specific objective, and some feature vehicles such as tanks to make things easier. Your troops can cross water but can't shoot within it, so finding and controlling bridges is often crucial, as is using the arrangement of trees to find hiding places to emerge from (unfortunately the computer AI can do the same thing)." --Moby Games

"Definitely one of the best-loved underdogs of all time :) This charming little game puts you in command of a 3-soldier squad in a variety of missions. The standard shoot-everything-in-sight formula is enhanced by a wonderfully interactive environment: hop into a jeep and crush your enemies underfoot, pick up and throw bombs, and many more secrets I'll let you find out ;) The little guys advance in rank, so treat them well!" --Underdogs

Home of the Underdogs has a version I patched years ago which is 11MB that you don't have to burn to a CD.   But it does make you install to c:\cannon2

Just be sure to read the tech notes on this version.  If you can't access that page for some reason, here's the short version:  Run the INSTALL.EXE to select your sound options.  Do not try to install the game.  Make sure you pick a sound device.  It's been reported that this version also runs well in WinXP with VDMSound2.1.0.

Chaos Overlords

"Gameplay is very like a boardgame. Each turn, a selection of three gangs is made available to you, from this pool you may hire or dismiss one. An extensive range of gangs is included, from Disgruntled Postal Workers to Renegade Nuns. Once hired, your gangs are dispensed throughout the city with instructions to seize control of the aforementioned locations (obtaining research bonuses from research centres, accelerated healing from hospitals, etc), shakedown the public for cash, research new weapons and technology or attack enemy installations.

Each gang may be outfitted with a weapon (ranged or melee) an item of protective gear and one miscellaneous item (performance-enhancing drugs, smoke bombs and 'cool shades' are a few examples). Getting the right gang & researching the perfect accessories for them is where much of the fun lies.

Combat, when it occurs (which is often) is automated, this is a strategy game, not a tactical simulation. Action is simultaneous turn-based with an optional time-limit to keep things moving. Multiplayer is supported through hotseat, modem, LAN or internet (TCP/IP) and is more stable than some current releases (possibly due to low average system specs when it was released)."  --Moby Games

Clandestiny

"Clandestiny seamlessly weaves traditional Scottish myth and lore into a modern story line. The game also offers a built-in reference guide that you can view at any time to learn more about Scottish culture. While the puzzles are of the parlor variety and seem detached from the main story line, it hardly takes away from the game. The solutions are usually simple, clean, and logical.

Clandestiny is quite a gem and an ultra rare diamond in the rough. A definite highlight from the creators of the 7th Guest and the 11th Hour." --Underdogs

"Monolith's arcade-style game features a swashbuckling cat's exploits against the evil king -- a Cocker Spaniard." --Moby Games

Claw gets a 5 star rating and with good reason, this game is intense and more fun to play than most of the games that have come across my desk in quite some time."--Underdogs

Clue!, The
(a.k.a. Der Clou!)

"The Clue! is an original mix of adventure and strategy. You are Matt Stuvysant, a young criminal wannabe trying to strike it rich in London... through robbery. Adventure elements include talking to other people for clues on potential targets and recruiting accomplices and getaway car drivers, while strategy involves planning every detail of the burglary, including escape route and more. Great game overall, but difficult due to the wealth of information and names you must keep track of. Still, if you like adventure games that successfully combine elements from other genres, or just unique games in general, The Clue! is a must-play that will keep you entertained for dozens of hours. Two thumbs up, and an entry into our Hall of Belated Fame." --Underdogs

Command & Conquer - Tiberian Dawn Gold Edition

"This is a re-release of the famous Command & Conquer, with tweaked graphics engine that allowed display of SVGA graphics.

It was released after the success of the "prequel" called Red Alert, which already featured the tweaked engine. Also, it was released after the recently released Windows 95 started gathering popularity in the gaming community.

The game is exactly the same as the original." --Moby Games

Congo, Descent Into Zinj

"A decent adaptation of the Michael Crichton's novel of the same name (or more precisely, the movie that followed), Congo suffers from frustrating action elements and overly obscure puzzle solutions. In one offending puzzle, you must tag a person and chase her around the jungle. You also can't examine any object in your inventory, so their uses typically become obvious after trial-and-error. Still, it's based on a gripping story (investigate the mysterious disappearance of a Congo expedition), and sports some good acting and cool gadgets to use." --Underdogs

Conqueror - A.D. 1086

"Strategy/managerial game set in the medieval England, much like Defender of the Crown. You start out as a young knight in control of a small fiefdom and perform the usual managerial decisions to develop your economy, raise an army and expand your territory. RPG and arcade gameplay are also thrown into the mix as you have to develop your character as a knight, going to melee and joust tournaments (actually arcade sequences) to gain experience. They also have other uses such as affecting your popularity and offering you the chance to expand your fiefdom by allowing you to courtship noble ladies.

The game is mostly played from an isometric view, except for some specific screens, and uses svga graphics. When does the game end? you actually have two choices: when you grow tired of obeying William the Conqueror's orders and march to London to rip his crown off, or when you go the hero route, and hunt down the enormeous dragon that has been scorching the lands for years." --Moby Games

Constructor

"Constructor is a fun, tongue-in-cheek business simulation in the same style as MicroProse's early classic Pizza Tycoon. Essentially, Constructor takes the empire building and resource management of the best simulations and adds to it a strong dose of character interaction, humor, and strategic competition. Take the role of a real estate developer in a race to build up and manage resources, properties, environments, and human interaction, while trying to outperform and destroy rival development firms.

The game is played from an isometric perspective, with you looking at the town and people milling around in it, similar to SimTown. You need to build houses and facilities to get your raw material like wood and concrete. While playing you have to get rid of whining tenants, cucarachas, your opponents and their attacks to destroy your buildings. There are a total of 40 different structures that you can create in the game. These range from steel mills and pawn shops to more elaborate structures like police stations and mansions."

"As good as the single player game is, the game also offers excellent multiplayer options. Up to four people can compete, making resources and time management more important than ever. With a twist of humor and well-balanced gameplay, Studio 3 has created a real underdog in Constructor. The economics model is sound, and the gameplay always fresh, funny, and engaging. Highly recommended, especially to anyone who enjoys Pizza Tycoon or Bullfrog's games. Two thumbs up!" --Underdogs

Corridor 7 - Alien Invasion

"In year 2012, it was finally possible to send a space ship to Mars. The scientists returned with a small object of unknown origin, which was supposed to be a proof for the existence of life on Mars. The object was placed in a special research facility, in the deepest place known as "Corridor 7". Exposed to gamma radiation, the mysterious object caused a portal to appear, which connected two worlds. Alien invasion began. It's time for you, a brave special agent, to descend into Corridor 7 where the fate of humanity must be decided.

Cruise for a Corpse

"Cruise for a Corpse is a fun murder mystery that is long on presentation but short on gameplay. The plot is heavily inspired by Agatha Christie's Murder on The Nile: the game takes us France, 1927, where aboard the luxury liner 'Karaboudjan III' the ship's owner, Niklos Karaboudjan, is found dead by his butler. Following the best murder-mystery tradition that a policeman or detective is always by chance on board, Inspector Raoul Dusentier is amongst the passengers. But before he can scrutinize the crime scene, some unknown figure knocks him out from behind and the corpse is removed."

"For all its frustrations, Cruise for A Corpse is still an enjoyable mystery, mostly due to its great atmosphere and interesting plot. If it weren't for extreme pixel-hunting, some bugs, and absurd writing (it was translated from French), it would be a truly great game." --Underdogs

Curse of Enchantia

"Curse of Enchantia is a graphic adventure game with an icon-based interface.

Lil' Brad didn't believe in witches until he met one. The evil hag torments the fantasy land of Enchantia, and has just summoned Brad from the Earth as an ingredient to her potion of eternal youth. Brad doesn't like this plan. And who would be better suited to rid Enchantia of the sorceress than a tender teen? Well? A heavily armed mercenary? Yeah, good point, but there's none available, I'm sorry. Brad'll have to do.

Starting in a prison cell, you help Brad free himself and find his way on the ocean floor, through a medieval city, a junk yard and an ice castle. You command Brad via an icon bar that pops up if you press the right mouse button. Our hero can perform plenty of actions, e.g. wearing, inserting, combining or fighting. Apart from steering Brad around, you do not need to click on the screen. Brad has to stand next to the object he wants fiddle with, which will then appear as an icon in the command bar."

"You cannot die in Curse of Enchantia; in fact, doing potentially deadly things is often rewarded with funny animations." --Moby Games

Crystal Hammer

"One of the best Breakout (aka Arkanoid) clones ever made, Crystal Hammer was one of Magic Bytes' last hits on the Amiga that failed to make an impact in the crowded PC market. Everything you love about Arkanoid is here, and enhanced dramatically with bright SVGA graphics, great sound effects, and plenty of surprises. There is even a plot in this one: you are a galactic "dustbin man" (Roger Wilco, anyone?) who is tasked with cleaning the universe of "crystalline contaminations." Yeah, right ;)" --Underdogs

Cyberia

"Released in 1994, Cyberia was part of the wave of "multimedia" games which tried to showcase the possibilities and innovation offered by a (at the time) brand-new platform: the CD-ROM. Part puzzle, part rail shooter and part action-adventure, this is a fun game which can be very challenging yet is easy to pick up.

This is a native DOS game, but since I haven't tried to run it I don't know how it performs under Win XP, VDMsound or DOSBox. Should you run into any problems, let me know and I'll look into it." --Machete

CyberJudas

"An underrated sequel to D.C.True's Shadow President, CyberJudas is a solid sequel that is unfortunately inferior to its predecessor in terms of gameplay, although it is not lacking in gameplay options and other enhancements.

The game offers three different ways to play, although all are similar. The first is just like Shadow President-- starting in 1993, run the United States as you wish as its Head of State. The second option is Hostile Cabinet. You have the same objectives, but with cabinet members who have their own agendas which make your job much harder. In this mode, you not only have to run the country, but also deal with Cabinet members who oppose your policies. It is, however, the third option that is the most interesting -- CyberJudas. In this one, you have a traitor in your Cabinet who is using his/her power to weaken the power of the US government and destroy you in the process. By hunting down clues and poking around their offices, you must stop these actions and eventually get enough evidence to charge them publicly with treason aganist the United States (punishable by death, although I know of no example in which this has been done) At the same time, of course, you still need to run the country and maintain your office and popular rating." --Underdogs

Cyclones

"I'm a fan of the classic First Person Shooters like Wolfenstein 3D or Doom, but I had never heard about or played CyClones so let me tell you one thing: I wish I had, because the game is brilliant! CyClones is a game developed by Raven Software and was published in 1994, but sadly, it wasn't very popular. "

"All in all, CyClones is a revolutionary and innovative game for the genre and if you like first-person shooters you're gonna have a good time. But like in most of all FPS's of that time, the mazes can get you tired after a while and the music doesn't help either. I'll give it a 4 points mark. " --Abandonia

Dark Sun - Shattered Lands

"Darksun: Shattered Lands is an AD&D game based off of the Darksun campaign pack from TSR. In the beginning of the game, you control a party of gladiators. It opens up with you in a fight with a multitude of monsters in an arena. After the battle you are sent back to the slave pens to wait for your next match. You talk to some of the other gladiators in the slave pens and escape (if you can) to help the free villages established by other escaped slaves to fight back against the totalitarian city-state of Draj and the large army they will soon send to wipe out all of the slave villages.

The game has a mouse interface and is basically point and click to move around, equip your party, talk to people, pick up things, etc. The gameplay is faithful to AD&D's rules in most cases." --Moby Games

Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager

"Wake of the Ravager is the sequel to Dark Sun: Shattered Lands. Although it has the same engine and basic gameplay as the original game, the graphics have been improved considerably with larger character sprites, etc. Like Shattered Lands, this game is a departure from the earlier gold box Dungeons and Dragons games and is more akin to Baldur's Gate in that instead of a first person "maze game" focusing on dungeon crawling, you have a third-person top down game with more of a focus on interacting with the characters and environment around you.

The game takes place from a top down perspective from which you view the world from above, and you control your character's actions with a mouse-driven icon-based point-and-click interface similar to those used in adventure games. Combat takes place on the same screen/environment as the normal adventuring portion of the game, and is turn based where you issue your commands and then the computer issues its commands." --Moby Games

"Nostalgic of the old private eye movies of the 1940's, you play detective Scott Anger, a Sam Spade type of guy, who is hired by a mysterious woman to find her missing brother, Dan. What at first appears to be just another missing persons case, Anger's investigation soon reveals that Dan was somehow involved in some much larger crimes including several murders and a bank robbery.

Similar in style to Tex Murphy, use your sleuthing skills to solve this graphical adventure game." --Moby Games

Daughter of Serpents

"Daughter of the Serpent is a graphic adventure game with a point-and-click interface.

An exotic, ancient city bustling with life. A strange, unnatural creature. A murder. And you, on a business trip to Alexandria, Egypt, suddenly involved in the case of a mysterious cult that deals with strange forces. Take a piece of ancient Egyptian mythology, add a pinch of demonology a la Lovecraft, and mix with a decent dose of colonial middle-east romanticism -- those are the ingredients for the sinister adventure game Daughter of the Serpents."

"The talents have no influence on the plot, but a marginal one on the dialogues; you will get slightly different conversations depending on your knowledge of certain subjects. Your choice of profession, however, opens three slightly different approaches to the mystery, culminating in three different endings. Although the basic course of events does always stay the same, a few scenes are exclusive to each branch. Also, you will be accompanied by either the greek occultist Ariadne Elytis or the rational inspector Bimbashi Cameron. Check out the screenshots section for examples of different scenes." --Moby Games

Death Gate

"Death Gate is a great fantasy adventure based on best-selling novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. As young Haplo, member of the despised Patryn race, you are tasked with finding all pieces of the World Seal to avenge your people and free them.

While similar to other Legend's graphical adventures, Death Gate broke new grounds with an ingenious spellcasting interface that is superbly integrated into the game engine, and required to solve many puzzles. The storyline is strong, although a little too simplistic given the rich fantasy world of the books. Death Gate is also notable for being the first Legend game to feature truly exceptional voice acting-- among the best of its kind. With excellent writing, challenging but not-too-difficult puzzles, and a very high production value with respect to SVGA graphics and voice acting, Death Gate is one of Legend's finest and most underrated games. A must-have." --Underdogs

Discworld

"This adventure game puts you in the shoes of Rincewind, a wizard whose sole purpose in life is to stay alive. He appears to be very good at it as well, because apparently the universe has decided to continuously challenge him.

The game takes place in the insane fantasy world created by Terry Pratchett, one of this world's most humourous authors, and is generally nuts." --Moby Games

Discworld II - Mortality Bytes!

"Two of the most underrated adventure games ever, both Discworld games are based on Terry Pratchett's pun-filled fantasy Discworld series, in which the whole world is carried through space by a turtle, and idioms and puns do have a life of their own.As bumbling wizard Rincewind, prevent the Dragon from destroying the world in Discworld 1 and find a way to convince the disillusioned Death to resume his day job in the sequel. Both games have great humor (although dialogues drag on at times), and some of the most devious but logical puzzles ever designed. Famed Monty Python veteran Eric Idle's performance as the voice of Rincewind is flawless, althought some dialogues are very long-winded to the point of frustrating. Clever puzzles and hilarious animations, however, more than make up for it. Two thumbs up!" --Underdogs

Dominus

"You are an Overlord in the employ of an aged King who has long since tired of battling. Protection and control of the kingdom, its resources, treasures and its force of monster are your obligations.

Neighboring clans are invading the dominion. They are a scourge of ravenous looters, soldiers, and mages. Each group desires some resource that is abundant in the kingdom. The longer they steal from you, the stronger they become.

The clans will attack from every direction. If you do not defeat them at the outskirts of the kingdom they will move toward your castle destroying and pillaging along the way. As they ravage the land and close on the castle they gain strength from the resources they have captured. Each clan is after specific resources. Some are invaders or scouts. Others are powerful mages.

Fight back the invaders with all your resources. Order your generals and monsters into combat. Lay traps. Use Magick to destroy the clans and enhance your own forces. Gain information through interrogation and spies or fight with your own hands." --Moby Games

Dracula Unleashed

"COM's last game (although no longer in their name), in contrast to the horrible Sherlock Holmes games earlier that used the same FMV-based engine, is a surprisingly good adaptation of the classic Bram Stoker novel.Gameplay is limited to being in the right place at the right time, with the right object in hand to advance the story. Still, multiple solutions and several possible endings make the game more replayable than most, and the acting is definitely a cut above average. Recommended for horror fans and adventure game newbies." --Underdogs

Dreamweb

"Dreamweb: a dark, brooding game set in a dystopian near-future. It is not a game for pacifists or vegetarians. Nor is it a game for those who value deep and intricate plots, characters with depth, or life-enhancing conversations. Creative Reality paid considerable attention to the game's atmosphere, but overlooked the value of a strong narrative. The game's ill explained alloy of sci-fi and mysticism is an excuse for the violent content, and would be more at home in an average platformer. The dialogue is functional rather than enjoyable. Puzzles have logical solutions, but the fact that you can pick up almost everything makes the solutions obscure at times. A prime example of style over content, but definitely worth a look for its gripping plot and very atmospheric gameplay. (Oh, and watch out for one of the earliest uncensored sex scenes in a mainstream PC game.)"--Underdogs

Druid - Daemons of the Mind

"The world of Navan has many islands, and four of them are reigned by the powerful Druid brothers: Lawson, Curak, Havnar, and Astor. They worship different deities and try to maintain the harmony of nature on their islands. But one day, Lawson mysteriously disappears. Unable to solve the mystery, the brothers seek out you, a grandson of a once powerful Druid, to search for Lawson in the entire world of Navan.

The gameplay of Druid is somewhat similar to that of Ultima VIII: Pagan. It is an action RPG with simple point-and-click interface and action-oriented combat. You can execute two different types of physical attacks (high and low) and cast a variety of spells. You don't have a party in the game." --Moby Games

Duckman: The Graphic Adventures of a Private Dick / Duckman: The Legend of The Fall

"Duckman: The Graphic Adventures of a Private Dick is based on the popular USA Network animated series Duckman. In this game, Duckman has been replaced by the new Duckman (who of course look more like a super-hero than the old Duckman) and you have to take back your show. As the title might suggest, it is an adventure game, in the LucasArts-style." --Moby Games

Dune

"A neat adventure/strategy hybrid from Cryo, this game casts you as Paul Atreides, the protagonist in the classic Dune series by Frank Herbert. Although the game is fairly linear, there's enough strategy elements to keep things interesting: you must allocate your followers (the native Fremen) to various jobs, maximize spice production, and ultimately fight the Harkonnen with armies. Also features stunning VGA graphics depicting passages of time. Easily one of the most graphically stunning games ever made, and one of the most unique. Recommended!" --Underdogs
