Battle
Realms: Winter of the Wolf
and
Battle Realms
 "Winter of the Wolf
is a stand-alone expansion to Battle Realms, so it
doesn't require that players own the original game. The expansion adds
new structures, units, and heroes for each of Battle Realms' four
clans. It has 12 single-player campaigns and 30 multiplayer maps.
The
prequel's 12 new scenarios take place seven years before the events
depicted in the original game, and they reveal how the Wolf clan, one
of the game's four playable factions, rose from slavery under the Lotus
clan." -- Moby
Games
 "Battle Realms is a
fantasy real-time strategy innovation inspired by
kung-fu movies and Japanese mythology. Players assume the role of the
hero Kenji as they develop a village of peasants into a clan of highly
specialized warriors. They must defend their village against
barbarians, evil magicians and deadly ninja. Battle Realms puts the
focus of gameplay on the battlefield and features detailed 3D
environments, realistic weather effects and a unique battle gear system
to advance the abilities of your warriors." -- Moby Games

Battlezone (Gold Pack)
 "Okay, I admit it.
Being from a younger generation, I am ignorant of the
older, great Atari games that I've heard so much about. I can't stay in
a conversation reminiscing about the "old" days when all 3D games were
just simple, 2 color vector wireframes. Does that make me any less
"hardcore?" Personally, I don't really care. I can still tell an
awesome game when it comes along. Simply put, Battlezone is great. I
really cannot say that I remember the old Battlezone (featured on the
Atari) but that makes no difference. Battlezone is one of the top games
of the year displaying awesome graphics, addictive gameplay and whose
only real drawback is its steep system requirements." -- Game Revolution
"Quibbles aside, this game is fun, fun, fun. It
looks great, combat is exciting and dynamic, and it's guaranteed to be
unlike any other game." -- Science
Fiction Weekly

Bedlam
"Bedlam is a fun Space Invaders-style vertical shooter
that packs a lot of gameplay variety in less than 200KB of
space.Although the 4-color CGA graphics unfortunately looks too pale
compared to the colorful Spectrum version, the fun gameplay remains
intact. The gameplay is simple: shoot wave after wave of alien ships
that fly from the top of the screen. You also have to watch out for
shooting gun terrets on the deck of motherships and starbases. Fast,
fun, and highly playable - the way a good shooter should be. Too bad
the levels are largely repetitive and the enemy ships look too much
alike to keep your attention for long." -- Underdogs

Beneath
a Steel Sky
"In futuristic Australia, there are giant cities owned
solely by
corporations, separated by a giant wasteland known as The Gap. When
Robert Foster's Gap-dwelling tribe is killed by soldiers from Union
City who capture him, everything changes for him. After a narrow escape
from the helicopter bringing him there as it inexplicably crashes,
Robert and his droid Joey must search the decaying city, attempting to
befriend both the snobby rich and the frustrated poor as the two
attempt to get out of the city, but in the middle of everything they
uncover the dark truth about LINC, the bizarre computer which makes the
city tick.
Using the then revolutionary Virtual Theatre engine,
BASS' characters can move freely independent of the player, allowing
the game world to be much more dynamic than anything seen before (other
than Virtual Theatre's debut game, the less popular Lure of the
Temptress). Otherwise, the engine provides tried and true
point-and-click adventure gameplay." -- Moby

Betrayal at Antara
 " Betrayal in
Antara uses an updated version of the game engine from Betrayal at
Krondor.
However, it does NOT continue the Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar saga, but
instead starts a new tale of similar events: Save the empire of Antara
from corruption and war." -- Moby Games
"Betrayal in Antara is very similar in design
and concept to the
previous Sierra game, Betrayal at Krondor, excepting that this one
doesn't have the input of Raymond Feist. Hence the story doesn't
contain the familiar themes and characters that Feist fans will
appreciate. The Antaran Empire (created by Peter Sarrett) is a new
world to explore, however, the game engine is very similar to that used
in Krondor with mouse control for interacting with the game world and
supplementary keyboard control for movement." -- Quandry

well-designed bionically-enhanced fighters, and fight in a dangerous

Most of the characters rely on

than a boxing match; interacting with the incredibly hazardous
environment adds another dimension to the gameplay- while avoiding an
opponent's gunfire by jetting off with your jetpack, you may just slam
right into a buzzsaw coming out of the wall." -- Moby Games

 "In the far future,
a fanatical group of religious extremists known as

seriously whacked-out Prime Paragon, the Mondites believe in the
evolution of man through machine by cybernetic implants. Unfortunately
everyone they've applied their theory to so far has ended up either
dead or insane. Until you came along.
You are a prisoner in a

turned into a hideous cybernetic nightmare by the evil Dr. Mastaba. The

power. And to make matters worse one of the aliens was accidentally

Blade
Runner
"The game is based
on the famous movie bearing the same title. In the
grim world of the future, cities lie in darkness, and nature gave its
way to artificial, bio-mechanical production of all creatures -
including human beings. Those "artificial humans" are called
replicants, and are treated as servants unworthy of being "true"
humans. You play the role of police officer McCoy, a Blade Runner,
whose special job is to hunt down replicant rebels. But during your
investigations, you also get to see their side, and your vision of the
world and society begins to change...
"Blade Runner" is an
adventure game with an emphasis on detective work rather than on
puzzles. There are very few "real" puzzles in the game, and the
gameplay mainly consists of questioning suspects, gathering evidence,
etc. There are also some action sequences, and throughout the game you
have the ability to use your gun. Your decisions can (and will)
influence the outcome of the story, bringing the game to one of the six
possible endings." --Moby Games

Blood
"You are a feared gunslinger, until you attempt to help a
woman whose
life has been destroyed by a mysterious Cabal. You too are sucked in
and killed; when resurrected you are out for revenge.
Ken
Silverman's
Build engine is the basis for what was possibly the goriest
first-person shooter ever made up to this time. The environment is
fully interactive, with moving floors and active vehicles. Destruction
of landscapes is possible, and bullet holes being left by misplaced
shots. The Build engine is 2.5D, so there are rooms above rooms and
puzzles which are based on this.
People explode violently when
taken out, to the point that you can use a zombie's head like a
football. Impaled victims can be found lying around, and people die in
different ways depending on how they are attacked and in which part of
their body." -- Moby Games

BloodNet
"You play as Ransom Stark, a computer hacker, scrounger
or mercenary
(depending on how the player answers the opening questions when they
start a new game) who finds himself caught up in a sinister affair
involving an evil global megacorporation, TransTechnicals, Manhattan, a
fight for Cyberspace and vampires!
Ransom Stark became stricken
with Hopkins-Brie Ontology Syndrome whilst working at TransTechnicals,
due to his forced extended exposure to Cyberspace while he worked
there. As soon as he was diagnosed he was dismissed from TransTech and
found himself homeless and hopeless. Thankfully an ingenious woman,
with a personal vendetta against TransTech, named Deirdre Tackett saved
his life by inserting a prototype brain implant of her own design and
this restoring his grip on reality.
BloodNet is an adventure game with RPG elements." --Moby Games

Blue Force
 "Unarguably the best
game from the group of renegade ex-Sierra employees that made up
Tsunami, Blue Force is an excellent police adventure by none other than
Jim Walls, of Police Quest fame.
Despite easy puzzles, hackneyed dialogues, and a cliche plot, the game
features a great interface, charming characters and graphics, and lots
of optional points. Help rookie Jake Ryan on investigations that will
shed light on his parents' mysterious death. It's much easier than
Walls' Police Quest games, but it's still a great adventure that will
particularly appeal to beginners. Much better than overhyped Police
Quest 4 (which was not designed by Walls) at least. Two thumbs up!"

It

things are much worse than ever before. Many new strains of infection

Buzz
Aldrin's Race Into Space
"Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space is a highly
innovative computer game which was
written shortly after the breakup of the Soviet Union. It's a
simulation of the US-Soviet
Space Race. This is a game for one or two players; you choose one
of the two superpowers,
head that country's space program, and try to beat your opponent to the
Moon.
The game has a lot of wonderful features, including a whole range of
different ways to get to the Moon.
You can follow in NASA's footsteps and fly Apollo, or try the Soviet
strategy of sending up a Soyuz
capsule on their ill-fated N1 moon rocket. You could even fly a
Gemini to the Moon--a proposal
that NASA eventually rejected in favor of Apollo. Alternatively,
you might decide we were
wrong to get away from the idea of reusable spacecraft, and put NASA
back on track toward an early
type of Space Shuttle. Or you might even take the
science-fiction-inspired Direct
Ascent approach with one big capsule that does it all! Not enough
variety? How about
a Soviet scheme to land an entire Soyuz capsule on the Moon?"
"Unfortunately BARIS is a fairly difficult game--some would say too
difficult (I get into that
in my Tips and Background, or you can read the reviews below).
But it still holds
endless fascination and playability for those of
us who are space-obsessed. The game was originally published in
1992 on floppy disk.
A year later, it was re-released in an Extended CD-ROM version, which
included much better movies,
and several small improvements that made it a bit easier, especially
for the American player." --http://www.geocities.com/raceintospace/

Blood
Omen: Legacy of Kain
"Arguably the closest RPG for the
PC to ever rival console classic Legend of Zelda in gameplay and sheer
addictiveness, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
from Stormfront Studios/Crystal Dynamics is highly underrated game that
sold moderately well on the 3DO system, but poorly on the PC (which was
published by Activision). Which is a shame, because Legacy of Kain is
in all respects a true classic, and one that is much better than its
overhyped sequel Soul Reaver."
"There's
not a huge amount of character interaction in the game, but this is not
a big downside considering that the game's focus is on action and
physical puzzles. One cool feature is that you can disguise yourself as
a mortal and try to speak to the NPCs, but usually they just give some
completely useless piece of information. Your quest progresses linearly
- you can't kill the Guardians in any order - you have to follow a
specific path. Still, you do have enough freedom, and there are many
subplots (which mostly hinge on finding powerful items) to pursue. What
is a shame is that you can't save your game whenever you want--
instead, you have to wait until you come across "save posts." Despite
this console system-style flaw, Legacy of Kain excels in
practically every other department, and its wonderful atmosphere and
near-flawless gameplay will keep you hooked into the wee hours of the
morning. A must-have for every RPG or action fan, and a true classic."
