Emperor: Battle for Dune

"From Westwood Studios comes Emperor: Battle for Dune, the sequel to Dune II, the very first real-time strategy game ever developed for the PC. Based upon Frank Herbert's series of books and the movie from producer Dino De Laurentiis, Emperor: Battle for Dune is exactly what one would expect from a Westwood strategy game, in that you build your base of operations as quickly as possible and then try to wipe out the enemy with numbers. However, that doesn't mean that the game isn't fantastic. Not knowing anything about Dune, I proceeded to spend days filled with delight on this sandy planet interacting with different races from the Dune stories and battling for control of the spice, melange. If Emperor: Battle for Dune fails me in any way, it is that I need more details of the Dune universe." --Womengamers.com

Enemy Nations

"In Enemy Nations you can choose a race of that you'll be the leader - there's a great amount of them, mostly of course alien, but also the earthlings can be chosen. After this you land on a randomly created terrain with your landing ship. Your task is to conquer a planet for your race. Of course you're not alone, other races try the same. The game is basically a real-time strategy game, but with an important economic aspect, resource managment is very important. The game has no campaign mode, all missions are stand-alone." --Moby Games

Elder Scrolls: Arena, The

"The Elder Scrolls: Arena is a first-person role-playing game, in which you must rescue the Emperor from his dimensional prison by recovering the eight pieces of the Staff of Chaos.

Arena is the first chapter in the Elder Scrolls series and it is huge. There are over 400 cities, towns and villages to explore, tons of magical items and heaps of spells to create.

The CD-ROM release featured speech in cutscenes and additional rendered sequences that the floppy version did not include." --Moby Games

Eradicator

"Three distinct characters are on offer in this shoot 'em up - choose from Kamchak the lizard or humans Dan and Eleena. The game's path varies depending on which character you choose.

The planet Ioxia is vital to your society, as nowhere else provides the vital element Mazrium. However, its long dormant alien forces have been woken up, and must be destroyed by a one-man army. You must fly into the Citadel to destroy its power source.

Eradicator combines pure action and puzzle solving, with 1st-person and 3rd-person views to switch between. There are 20 different weapons, with the missiles you control after launching perhaps the most unusual. The single-player levels plus five more are all available for multi-player action." --Moby Games

Evolution: The Game of Intelligent Life

"A sort of combination of Civilization and SimEarth. You control one of the earliest tetrapods (land animals), and try to get it to reproduce, spread, and evolve into a later species, ultimately evolving an intellectual species (which doesn't have to be Homo sapiens). There are some 160-odd species in the game, including dinosaurs; the continents move around during play; era changes are marked by geological catastrophes, which occur on a semi-random basis. In addition to the 'full' game, there are shorter scenarios for the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic." --Moby Games

Exploration (a.k.a. Voyages of Discovery)

"Exploration is a fun game of 15th -- 19th century era of exploration from Interactive Magic. Earlier released in Europe by Black Legend as Voyages of Discovery, the game attempts nothing that we haven't seen before since the days of Seven Cities of Gold or Colonization: a combination of trading, exploration, war, and economics elements set in the age of exploration. But it does add a lot of complexity to the familiar formula. You can play against up to four computer or human (via network options) opponents. The main goal of this game, as is in most strategy games of this kind, is to either annihilate or do better than your opponents. In Exploration, this is accomplished by exploring the world with sailing vessels, finding other neutral civilizations and either conquering or befriending them, and developing a good economic base by trading with these new alliances. War is also another option, but one that should be avoided at all costs because it tends to reduce your meager assets. Success in the game relies on laying efficient and profitable trade routes between your colonies and your home port. As time passes, new and bigger ships become available for you to lay longer routes. You can also send expedition groups on shore -- these units have the ability to either conquer or befriend the natives they meet. Random elements such as disease, starvation, and fires must also be dealt with." --Underdogs

Extreme-G 2

"In this second installment of Extreme-G, you once again will race with and against the incredible capabilities of G-bikes (they closely resemble of the ones in Tron) through several surreal, twisting tracks. Be hell on wheels blasting your challengers with an arsenal of vicious weapons and even break the sound barrier!

The game is expanded on its predecessor by many ways; however, while being converted from the original N64 version for the PC, it loses some of its features like the multiplayer support (and its enhanced multiplayer options)."

Fable

"Fable is a decent point-and-click adventure from Telstar that unfortunately got very little notice due to lack of fanfare, limited distribution, and the general slump in adventure game genre. The plot is typical fantasy mumbo-jumbo: you control Quickthorpe, who is tasked with finding the four fabled jewels to restore his land to former peace. Gordon Aplin echos up my feelings about the game in his review at the Quandary:

"Overall, I thought that Fable had a lot of potential that was not quite fulfilled. The dialogue and the ending were, for me, disappointing, as was the lack of any real depth to the story. On the other hand, I still enjoyed the adventuring components, but then, I do like this style of graphic adventure. Experienced players may find it to be a bit too easy, but it's certainly entertaining enough to provide light relief between tougher games and offers a reasonable challenge to players new to the genre. I'd like to recommend it as suitable for all the family, but just remember that it does contain some rather immature and uninspired dialogue." --Underdogs

Flashback CD version

"Flashback: Quest for Identity can easily be considered one of the best platform games ever made. Following the initial success of the 1992 release, in 1995 Delphine has released an enchanced CD version featuring new cinematics with better music and digitized speech."

"The custcenes are good indeed. Instead of the vector graphics and subtitles of the floppy version, here we get high quality rendered scenes with enchanced audio and digitized speech."

"Apart from fixing a particular clipping bug (that enabled the player to pass through most of the walls, if they ran away from the wall and immediately walked back), the actual game has not changed one jot, however."   --The Fifth Horseman, Abandonia

Feeble Files, The

"From the creators of sleeper hit Simon the Sorcerer comes this truly epic adventure game that redefines the term "value for the money." Every CD in this 4-CD game jammed packed (and I mean packed) with puzzles, movies, and a huge dose of charming British humor. In a stern, alien society reminiscent of Normality, help Feeble, hapless citizen as he inadvertently violates one directive after another and stumbles onto a web of espionage. Tedious dialogues (which you must listen to very carefully) and some pixel-hunting mar this fun game. If you're looking for a challenging game that will seem to take forever to solve, this is your game." --Underdogs

Flight of the Amazon Queen

"This charming game from a not-so-well-known Australian developer puts you in the shoes of Joe King, freelance pilot hired to escort actress Faye Russell to a photo shoot deep in the Amazon jungle. The game is not up to par with LucasArts games (which are obvious inspiration here), but it still offers plenty of solid puzzles and a gentle off-beat humor that will elicit a laugh or two and leave a smile on your face at the end. The CD-ROM version also offers surprisingly good voice acting - a rare treat in adventure games.

Note: In 2004, copyright holders have released the game as freeware - both the full CD-ROM talkie version and floppy disk version! Flight Unlimited

"Flight Unlimited is a civilian flight simulator. You can choose between an Extra 300s, a Bellanca Decathlon, a Sukhoi SU-31, a Pitts S-2B and a Grob S-103. Take part in aerobatic competitions or, if you're a beginner, learn how to fly in 34 lessons.

Flight Unlimited stresses reality: All ground textures and elevations are based on real satellite photodata, and the flight model has a heavy basis in real world physics. The manual is quite detailed, and combined with the in-flight tutorials, the user is provided with a very gradual introduction to flying.

A very comprehensive piece of work, and a defining title for Looking Glass, whose only competition at the time was Microsoft Flight Simulator (which look immediately dated compared side by side to Flight Unlimited)." --Moby Games

Fragile Allegiance

"In all respects a greatly revamped version of Amiga classic K240 space strategy game. Similar to its predecessor, this is one of those games that you will love for the rest of your life, one of those games that kept you up untill the early hours of the morning for weeks.

The basic storyline is simplistic, you are the newest employee of TetraCorp, charged with the job of mining minerals from asteroid belts in the fragmented sectors. Sounds easy enough, that is untill you add the alien element to it, 7 other species are out with exactly the same goal as you, some will be friendly and some wil be unfriendly, and then you have the Mauna the scourge of the sector. The diplomatic aspect of the game is in my opinion an equal to Master Of Orion II with a multitude of options. One of my favourite of these is trading pointless trade goods with the Merchants that appear from time to time and selling them to certain species for great profit.

Fragile Allegience also focuses more intensly on the biological warfare side of things, your agents can be sent to an opponents asteroid with various toxins, each one of which requires a certain antidote (if available). which of course you can always sell to them afterwards ;) Combat is handled well, with your ships being fully customizable so you can build a fleet dependant on your own ideas, Combat can also be very strategical, as an example if you were to gather a large fleet and move it towards the border between you and an alien culture, the AI will pick up on this and adjust the reactions accordingly. As well as ships each asteroid has the ability to build missles which can be aimed at your opponenent, and stratgic placement of missle bay asteroids can be very helpfull.

This game is almost everything you can ask for in a space strategy with the only failing point being the inability to perform interesting research, but this is catered for by the ability to purchase new blueprints from TetraCorp headquarters. A must have!" --Underdogs

Freddy Pharkas - The Frontier Pharmacist

"Yee-haw! Experience life in the wild, wild west in this adventure co-designed by jokesters Al Lowe and Josh Mandel.

As the title suggests, you are a gunman-turned-pharmacist who will soon find enough cause to pick up a gun again. Excellent puzzles (except for the annoying, devious copy-protection scheme disguised as "puzzle" in filling prescriptions), cool plot, and tons of zany characters. The humor is somewhat stale and predictable, however. Suffice it to say that if you have never understood the appeal of John Wayne movies and raunchy cowboy humor, you won't enjoy this game. But for anyone who appreciates jokes that have the word "flatulant" in them, this is the perfect game for you." --Underdogs

Freespace 2

"Undoubtedly one of the best 3D space combat games ever made, Freespace 2 by Volition is a superb space opera of epic proportions. The strong emphasis on plot development combined with spectacular graphics and story-based missions make Freespace 2 a worthy contender to Origin's more well-known Wing Commander games. In fact, in my humble opinion the fun factor of Freespace 2 far surpasses that of Prophecy Gold, the last Wing Commander game, by a considerable margin." --Underdogs

A couple of different versions are circulating through torrentz.  There's also Freespace Zone which appears to have the ISOs (3 cds), but the links are down.

Also available through BitTorrent, and hosted through Home of the Underdogs.  Supposedly you can get the missing cutscenes here,  making the game complete.   I'll try and follow up on this later to see if that's true.

Future Wars - Time Travellers
aka Future Wars - Adventures in Time
aka Les Voyageurs du Temps

"What an unlikely hero! You are a window cleaner.A common, little window cleaner. Yet you discover, more due to your notorious curiosity than by mistake, a time machine in your chiefs back office. Strange? Absolutely. Your adventure in the past and the future is about to begin. The quest? Four words: Evil aliens. Beautiful girl. Any questions?

Future Wars, Delphine Software's debut and first attempt at an adventure game, is a fun adventure controlled via a home-made point-and-click interface. A right click brings up the verb menu. After choosing one of the six commands, you point the mouse over the desired target and execute with a left click -- straight and simple. Small objects are depicted by enlarged drawings -- once you found them. Pixel hunting is a very frequent sport in Future Wars, making the game extremely frustrating as you must move the mouse slowly across the screen, looking for 1x1-pixel objects you may have missed. Lazy players are punished with puzzle dead-ends. Fortunately, the plot is inventive enough to keep the players glued to the screen and forgive the game's quirks. Overall, a worthy first release that bodes well for the company that would later be famous for excellent action/adventure games." --Undedogs

"After eons of fighting between the genders, men and women have broken into separate factions, each using genetic engineering to create new followers, and waging terrible war upon each other.

Upon selecting the side you wish to play (depicted as either clueless blondes who can't drive, or beer-swigging lazy oafs), you select a team of 4 for your missions, arm them up with guns and other assorted weaponry, and wreak havoc on the 'enemy' in this isometric Syndicate-like game.

The story begins in the 1880s in London. British gentleman Piers Featherstonehaugh (pronounced "fanshaw") and his faithful servant, Mossop, arrive back home to discover a talking cat on their doorstep. The cat tells them of an outlandish plot concerning genetic mutations gone haywire. It then becomes Fanshaw's goal to stop this ghastly activity and to catch the fiends behind it.

Players step into the shoes of Piers as he and Mossop travel around the globe... and beyond. He will meet many unusual characters and talk with them during his quest .. including talking animals as well as people.

Exploration is in 3rd person perspective and most puzzles involve the multitude of inventory items that can be found while exploring."

G-Police

"This game involves you as a special police force (G-Police) in a futuristic world, down in the scum of colonies and cities, within your fighter police aircraft, tracking and taking down the bad guys. Filled with great explosions, a variety of weapons, and a fully interactive game world." --Moby Games

"That granted, the experience of playing G-Police left me awestruck. This is one incredible game. The combat is quite intense, and nothing can match the glory of watching your assailants plummet to the asphalt below, trailing realistic fire. Or blowing a building completely off the map with a massive firebomb, complete with shockwaves and incendiary clouds. I recommend this game to just about anybody with the 3D accelerator necessary to make it sing." G-Police is a must-have for every serious FPS fan, but be warned of the frustrating difficulty level." --Underdogs

Grackon's Curse

"Grackon's Curse is an obscure puzzle adventure game developed by a Taiwanese company, which is now out of business. You play the game in the perspective of Castle Crondiff's only heir. An evil wizard named Grackon has cursed the Castle and you enter it determined to free it from this evil curse and also find a way to teach Grackon a lesson. The player explores the castle using a poorly designed point & click interface. The game runs only in 256-color display status but this doesn't mar the colorful 3D rendered graphics. The game entertains many sort of puzzles including mazes, logical board games and word quizs with clues hidden in different chests and other objects available in the castle's rooms. At first most of the rooms are locked but as you advance in the game and solve puzzles you will find keys to these locked rooms. As a word of caution, I would suggest to save often as one wrong move will lead you to death and loading a saved game can only help you out in such critical situations." --a-for-adventure

Grand Prix 2

"All the circuits and drivers of the 1994 Formula 1 World Championship is recreated in Geoff Crammond's second racing simulation. The game is viewed from within the cockpit - external views are provided primarily for use in replays or demonstrations. Texture mapping and full detail in the rear view mirrors are available for almost every visible feature.

The game has 5 skill levels, 7 driving aids such as automatic brakes and a dotted 'ideal racing line' to follow available on lower skill levels, and variable race and practice session lengths. You will have to alter the car's setup to get the best possible car performance - this ranges from standard features such as brake balance and gear ratios onto more technical ones such as spring settings and the ride height. Multiplayer games involve either taking it in turns on a single computer, or on a linkup." --Moby Games

Grand Theft Auto 2
and
Grand Theft Auto

"If you've lived a life that's full, traveling each and ev'ry highway, it's still likely you haven't yet done it your way, until you play GTA. The game that made it's fame by letting you run down pedestrians and shoot innocent bystanders has returned with better graphics and amazing improvements to the multitude of sound effects."

"Here's the 411: you're trying to impress low-life, underworld crime bosses, and you have to do their dirty work in any way you can. This includes killing people, stealing cars, throwing bombs, inciting mayhem, and belching at passers-by. But the best part of this game comes once you start a carjacking. More patient players pick the parked cars and evade the cops for longer; those of us with limited attention spans just like using a truck to bang into other drivers in the way, ramming them until the road is clear. The new edition boasts better graphics for these escapades, but there is still something to be said for the pixellated pleasure of the first GTA, in the same way that some of us hold a fondness in our heart for our TRS-80 Tandys.

Once you adjust to the birds-eye view, it's easy to become obsessed with completing your missions. The improved AI is as clever as the rest of the game; in version two, for example, the bus we were driving caught on fire after we hit too many cars. Imaginative and capable of making you laugh out loud even as you ready your rocket-launcher, Grand Theft Auto 2 is a great ride. --Jennifer Buckendorff, Amazon Review

"You are a gangster in GTA. You start in one of the three US cities in the game. You get different jobs to do, like stealing cars, "helping out" at a bank job or killing someone. You can go everywhere in the city and steal almost every car (also trains and tanks). There are crates scattered all over the city which contains bonuses, such as a get out of jail free card or new weapons." --Moby Games

Great Battles of Caesar, The

"Another installment in The Great Battles series, Caesar includes 9 of the battles fought by Gaius Julius Caesar: Vercellae, Chaeronea, Bibracte, Sabis, Dyrrachium, Pharsalus, Ruspina, Thapsus and Munda. Game modes include Battle (playable solo or against a remote player) and a Campaign mode where the player has to win the Civil War.

Battles are played like tabletop wargames. Each turn is composed by several rounds of orders that each General can give to his troops (the number depending on his level), the winner of the battle being the first to make the other reach zero in his rout level." --Moby Games

Guilty

"Guilty is a graphic adventure game with a icon-based point-and-click interface.

It is the sequel to Innocent Until Caught.

Jack T. Ladd, notorious thief and would-be nightmare of the galaxy, has suddenly got female company. Rather involuntary, that is. Ysanne Andropath is not only a stunning red-head, but also a cop. So she throws Jack into a cell on her spaceship and heads off for stellar jail, when disaster strikes. The problem isn't that first thing Jack does, is escaping his cell. The problem isn't even that second thing Jack does, is dumping the ships hyperdrive out into space. But now, Ysanne is forced to work together with Mr. Trouble. THAT's what she calls disaster.

Using the familiar, slightly overhauled interface, you set off for another adventure to save the galaxy. You can play the game alternatively as the incorrigible macho Jack or the tough feminist Ysanne. In either role you'll be visiting the same places, but solve entirely different puzzles. For example, on the same planet, Ysanne has to stop an advancing army, whilst Jack tries to steal back the spaceships lost navigational device. On rare occasions, the two even have to engage in teamwork.

Guilty, like its predecessor, uses rendered flight scenes for the spacecraft landing and taking off. The CD version of the game adds full speech for the two protagonists." --Moby Games

Hardwar

"I stil consider Hardwar (released 1998) to be the best game ever. The freeform game mechanics have been executed with such good judgement that it has not been surpassed by other freeform spacegames of the 21st century like I-warII. egosoft's X series or freelancer.

The setting of the game has a cult atmophere, it reminds strongly of the 2000ad comics and the cult film "Hardware". the cutscenes often related to a plotline you can choose to follow are done with great taste and black humor.

When you play you'll soon find that the AI in this game has a life of it's own. The AI characters have a job, a bankaccount friends and enemies and sometimes a bounty on their head. If you would do nothing they'd still go on with their busines and life goes on. This means that no two games you play wil ever be the same.

I can go on for hours about this game, but a friend of mine put it like this "If I devide the price I paid fro this game by the hours I've played it, no game would come close even if I had paid 200 euros" --Xaffax, Amazon Review

"
I can honestly say that Hardwar is one of the finest games I've played in my life. Sure, it's dated graphically, but the game is like Elite, but with gravity and solar power. And amazing music." --T.D. Cruise, Amazon Review

You must build up your castle by adding different locations to earn different units to strengthen your army with. Units include dragons, cyclopses, phoenixes (phoeni?), paladins, and many more. Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe

"An updated release of the Hidden & Dangerous game including the add-on "Devil's Bridge". The update consists of an included editor to modify the missions included, improved graphics, and slightly modified missions (new enemy patrol paths etc).

The update did not affect gameplay. Hidden & Dangerous is still a matter of partially planning the actions of your SAS-team, and playing as one of those brave people to complete the missions as a team. The total of episodes is 9, which hold 32 missions. Your chance of survival are dictated by your ability to use the proper tactics at the right moment, not by being the fastest gun in town. A number of useful tactics are explained in the manual." --Moby Games

"Holiday Island is in the style of Sim City, but instead of building a town you have to fill up some Carribean Isles to create the ideal holiday location. There are more than 60 different buildings to choose from - hotels, bars, car rentals, sport facilities, parks, discos and many more. You are facing several rivals, and can play dirty tricks on them to inhibit their progress

Hollywood High

"Ever wanted to make your own little cartoon movies? Don't have much know-how? Well, Hollywood High is definitely the game for you! In this game, the basic premise is that you can write and direct your own little cartoons, and it's so easy, a child could do it! You pick from 12 characters (my favorite is Gus, the Lars Fredericksen look-alike), lots of backdrops (the couch, the homecoming dance, the music store, et cetera), and go from there. You can do a serious movie, or you can just make 'em do tricks ("Watch me pull a burger out of my..."). Either way, even after eight years and thousands of stories, it never gets old, and I have a feeling it never will.

If you can get your hands on a copy (Theatrix went bust a few years ago so I think this game is out of print), I highly recommend doing so. It may not work on newer computers (it wouldn't install properly on my Sony Vaio, which I got about a year ago, but it works on the one downstairs which is about a few years old), but if you have an older computer... this game is even worth a HUNDRED dollars! It's that damn good! It's addicting, fun, and without a doubt, the best computer game ever (sorry Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2). Period." --Eggplant, Amazon Reviewer
