I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream

"The game is based on a collection of short stories by Harlan Ellison. After the Cold War, the computers of the USA, Russia and China take over the world and wipe out almost the entire human race. The Allied Mastercomputer (called AM) holds the last five humans as prisoners to torture them. Any of them has to face his or her past in a virtual adventure AM has designed for them. There they encounter their fears and weaknesses.

The player can choose which of the protagonists he wants to be but in fact he has to complete all of the six stories in order to solve the game. There are different ways of completing the game depending on the humanity the player shows.

The voiceacting features Harlan Ellison as AM."--Moby Games

I.M. Meen

"The eponymous villain of the game I.M. Meen has a serious pet peeve-- he can't stand it when children study. Thus, he creates a magical book that, when read, traps children in Meen's evil labyrinth. As the player, you assume the role of one of 2 new children trapped in the maze. Your mission is to free the other children imprisoned in this dungeon and find a way out for yourself. As you walk around the first-person perspective maze, you will encounter a number of fearsome monsters to make your quest difficult. However, you have the ability to punch the enemies."

"The educational aspect of this game involves completing miniature assignments in order to free imprisoned children. For example, a letter from Gnick to Meen is displayed along with the instructions to correct the 2 punctuation errors contained in the text. Once the player successfully completes the task, a fellow captured child is freed." --Moby Games

Imperialism

"A turn-based strategy game about the imperialistic expansionism of the 18th and 19th century. Unlike many 'conquer the world' games, the sole emphasis isn't on military conquest. Imperialism promotes victory through a combination of methods, including the relatively unique notion of exploiting underdeveloped nations and expanding your territories through military, political, and economic means."

"Gameplay takes place on a world map, where you maneuver your strategic units to build, explore, or develop your empire. Combat takes place on its own turn-based battlefield. A number of other screens allow you to manage your economic and diplomatic stances and set your production and trade levels." --Moby Games

Incubation: Time is Running Out (a.k.a. Battle Isle Phase Four)

"If you think humans are afraid of catching a nasty venereal disease, just imagine how the inhabitants of the planet Scayra must feel. The failure  of the main energy shield protecting the colony city of Scay-Hallwa has led to the escape of a sinister virus -- Herpes Simplex. Sometimes fatal, always uncomfortable, Herpes has almost become something of a joke in our society. For the indigenous creatures of Scayra, the virus is no laughing matter. Instead of simply giving them an uncontrollable rash, Herpes mutates these beings, called Scay'Ger, into horrible, bloodthirsty monsters. They cannot be reasoned with, and want only to destroy every single human they come across...for they blame you for their unholy transformation.

Blue Bytes's Incubation is the latest game in the "Battle Isle" series, and quite possibly the most innovative turn-based tactical combat game ever made. The player controls a squad of space marines who must accomplish missions deep in the heart of the besieged city of Scay-Hallwa. Your ultimate objectives are twofold: secure as much of the colony as possible from the marauding Scay'Ger, and add support to the evacuation." --Adrenaline Vault

The game consists of the playdisc and the original soundtrack.  This is the UK version, "Battle Isle Phase Four."

Tech Note: These files have largely confirmed as working.  It's been reported so far that the 1.02 patch needs to be applied to disable the copy protection and Win 98 compatibility should be enabled to get the game running on Windows XP. After doing that, everything seems to work O.K.
Tech Note Update: After further investigation I've found that the 1.03 can also be applied afterwards, but only if you use a working copy (not one from Filefront).

Iron Helix

"A rogue navy ship named Obrian poses a grave threat to humanity. A virus has wiped out its crew, but the threat of it using its Iron Helix doomsday weapon is still there. Using a robotic droid, you must explore the ship to work out how to shut these down.

The game uses interactive quarter-screen footage to display the ship's layout. From an action perspective, the main unusual challenge is that an automated security device is chasing you down, and must be avoided and ultimately destroyed.

As you explore the ship, you will find data ports, which can be jacked into to gain information or to open doorways. To access most of these, you will need to find a DNA sample from a member of staff whose role gave him/her access."--Moby Games

    Jagged Alliance

"Lock & Load.... Your Going in. Welcome To The Jungle... Jagged Alliance (JA) is set on the island of Metavira, the sweltering jungle home to the panacean fallow tree, whose sap can cure every ailment know to mankind. Ruthless pharmaceutical companies pay handsomely for the sap, and some unsavory characters might be willing to resort to violence in order to be the one who sells it to them. Brenda and Jack Richards, the father-daughter scientists who researched the fallow tree have fallen prey to their unscrupulous former-partner, Dr. Lucas Santino. Santino has hired a band of mercenaries and seized control of the island so he can harvest, produce, and sell the fallow tree sap. The Richards' contact you in the hope that you can wrestle control of the island from Santino and his boys. Santino is a very determined man... To do this, you're going to need mercenaries of your own. That's where A.I.M. (the Association of International Mercenaries) comes in. A.I.M. is sort of a mercenary clearing-house where you can select from among 60 different mercenaries to find the ones who you think are best suited to battle for control of the island, the fallow tree, and the fate of modern medicine. Ultimately, your goal is to take control of the island away from Santino. Jagged Alliance is unlike any other game in that it is a strategy game, role playing game, tactical combat and strategic wargame all rolled seamlessly into one exceptional adventure like storyline and game experience. This game has "personality" that you just wont stop playing. With over 60 mercenaries, 60 attitudes, 60 voices and over 4000 lines of spoken text from them you will get to know all the players on the island. Enormous care was taken in the creating of each mercenary to give them distinct personalities, strengths, and weaknesses."--Box Description

    Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Jazz Jackrabbit 2 - The Secret Files

"In this sequel to Jazz Jackrabbit, you have 4 different worlds to finish all featuring eight-layer smooth parallax scrolling in up to 640x480 high resolution VGA modes. Different from the existing worlds you can make and play your own levels by using Jazz Creation Station (3-level shareware version is also included within the game!).

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 allows you to play not only with Jazz but also with his brother Spaz! They both have their own special moves and you can even use both character in some of the levels of the game. And there is party mode too! You can either play at the same computer with splitscreen up to four players or up to eight players on two screens via modem, having the opportunity to choose from 5 different game modes... " --Moby Games

"The Secret Files is a separate episode to Jazz Jackrabbit 2. It features nine new levels containing new textures, and enables you to play as a third character, Lori. Unlike the original game, TSF's gameplay can be difficult at times, but in almost each level, there are alternate routes that you can take, and once they discover them, it will make them play the game all over again, just to take different routes.

If players complete the nine levels and still can't get enough of the game, then they may try their luck in 20 other levels that were created by fans of the game, including the single-player level, "A sting in your tail!". Like Jazz 2, TSF still comes with JCS, the Jazz Creation Station, where gamers have the opportunity to build their own levels." --Moby Games

Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds

"The game based on Jeff Wayne's musical play and the classic science fiction novel by H.G. Wells. it is the year 1898 and the Martian have escaped from their dying homeworld to conquer the Earth and take its resources - and the blood of its inhabitants.

Take either side in this epic real-time strategy game. You can play as the Martians with their superior technology and powerful but expensive war machines in their campaign to take over Great Britain and the rest of the world. Or play as the weaker but more numerous Humans to turn back the alien onslaught before their fiendish plans can be made reality."

"You must use your time wisely to build up your forces and production facilities within your sectors before the enemy can launch their attack. Jewels of the Oracle

"Jewels of the Oracle is a stationary puzzle game with no real story line or plot. A total of 24 well-designed, ingenious puzzles must be solved, each independent of the others. Most of them can be played in two difficulty levels (Easy or Hard), and the Oracle provides clues to help along the way.

The beautiful graphics, where the puzzles reside, are designed in an Egyptian or Mesopotamian style. Music plays in the background to provide atmosphere, but it can be turned off if it gets repetitive. The basic layout is a hexagon around an Oracle's well. There are three doors on the outside of the hexagon, and the first one is where you begin the game. In each room is a puzzle you have to solve to get a jewel which must be taken back to the Oracle's well."

"Since there is no real story line or deeper meaning behind all this, Jewels is not an adventure game but rather a collection of challenging puzzles in a gorgeous setting. If you enjoy this game, be sure to look play its sequel Jewels II: The Ultimate Challenge." --Moby Games

The trap worked all too well as it also trapped the stone cutters that built the trap in the walls of the cave. Its your mission to go in and unlock the stone cutters by solving various puzzles based on Chinese myth and lore.

    King of Dragon Pass

"In this turn-based strategy game you take control of a tribe of humans in the magical world of Glorantha. Yours and many other tribes have recently migrated to Dragon Pass, a rich and fertile valley if vastly unexplored. You try to survive and thrive in this environment however you can. You can raid or fight the other tribes, trade with them or explore the wilderness around you. The future of your tribe depends on your choices. Basically the game is split into four seasons in which you can do a limited amount of things. As resources you have the land you live on, you have horses, cattle and pigs. Your tribe consists of trained warriors and farmers. The tribe is ruled by a Council of six, which you choose among a group of potential candidates, according to their abilities and the gods they believe in. There are also random events, which will force you to make decisions. Alas remember every decision has its consequences and even the most trivial choice will have repercussions in time. Also this game is based on the role-playing game Rune Quest."--Moby Games

    Kingdom O' Magic

"A fantasy adventure game spoof - along the lines of Zork but with British Humour. Play as either an unintelligible Green Lizard Guy (use subtitles) or the token female - who was intended to be humourously overproportioned although now Tomb Raider has raised the standard.

The designers intended for the game to be non-linear, and many NPCs wander around the entire map getting into fights with each other.

Entirely comedic - the troubleshooting guide in the manual discusses sexual malfunction. The dialogue trees encourage the player to be abrasive and confrontational - not doing so will cause you to miss out on much of the enjoyment, and many of the puzzles."

    Knight Moves

"Knight Moves puts a twist on the old chess game and puts you in charge of a knight that has to leap his way trough increasingly complicated chessboards filled with enemies, hazards, power-ups and treasures. Your knight moves in the traditional L-shaped patterns, which means you'll have to constantly be planning ahead, and quickly too, because the knight is in constant motion, and you only have a few seconds to decide its next move.

The game is played in a 3-D board, but the graphics consist mostly of 2-D scaled sprites and the chessboards themselves are irregular affairs with walls, pits, etc."

    Knight Rider

"This is a game based on the famous TV series Knight Rider starring David Hasselhoff, which aired from 1982 to 1986 in the US.

In the game, the player takes control over the Knight Industries Two Thousand, better known as KITT, a high-tech, fully computerised car. Together with Michael Knight, you have to fight crime in 10 missions and 15 races.

Many original ideas from the TV series have been included in the game. KITT, Michael, Bonnie and Devon are all in the game, as are the evil Garth and KARR. The player can also use various original functions of the car, like Turbo Boost, Super Pursuit Mode, Ski Mode or the famous Scanner, whose sound everyone should recognise.

The game can only be played in campaign mode, where KITT and Michael have to solve a mysterious case, starting out as a simple bank robbery." --Moby Games

    Labyrinth of Crete

"The second game Cliff Johnson (Fool's Errand) designed for Phillips Interactive is virtually identical to Merlin's Apprentice, with ancient Greek myths as the backdrop this time instead of Arthurian legends.

The game's premise is that you have been sentenced to death for stealing from Hera, Queen of the Gods. The only way to freedom lies in the twisted path of the Labyrinth of Crete. Each turn presents new puzzles, angry gods and goddesses, and deadly monsters to thwart your attempt at escape.

Puzzles in Labyrinth of Crete will be familiar to anyone who has played Merlin's Apprentice. There are some action puzzles that require you to click on objects that float by, several logic puzzles that involve moving objects into a certain configuration using only a few types of movements, and word puzzles requiring deciphering some encrypted sentences. The game has three difficulty levels which can be set on a puzzle-by-puzzle basis and changed during the game. And, like Merlin's Apprentice, the state of partly finished puzzles is not saved when you close your game. The logic puzzles, naturally, present the most challenge, although some of them can be quite hair-pulling at hardest difficulty level." --Underdogs

Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos

"Westwood's Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos is sequel in spirit to acclaimed Eye of The Beholder 2, but surpasses its AD&D predecessor in every way. The game broke new grounds with astounding graphics, great soundtrack, intuitive user interface, great spell effects and plot development, and last but not least, excellent automap."

"Lands of Lore remains to this day one of the most accessible RPGs that stand the test of time, with the power to convert even the most ardent RPG dissenters into hapless addicts. It may not be original or even revolutionary, but it is definitely a flawless execution. The CD-ROM version features the voice of Patrick Stewart as King Richard, along with other multimedia enhancements that make the game even more atmospheric than the floppy version. As a game design, it is a role model; as a game, it is simply a must-have."--Underdogs

    The Last Express

"One of the most original and atmospheric adventures ever released, The Last Express is a masterpiece that exemplifies what storytelling should be. You are Robert Cath, who boards the train in Paris to meet a friend only to find him dead. The list of innovations in the game is endless: from the surprisingly effective comic-book-meets-art-nouveau graphics style, exciting real-time gameplay, and gripping story, you'll be playing and re-playing this game for days to come. The lack of challenging puzzles and some frustrating combat didn't prevent it from being a true classic. If you love adventure games, you owe it to yourself to try this incredibly innovative and absorbing game - one that will compel you to replay more than once as you follow optional paths and try to unravel the mystery. A must-have." --Underdogs

    Last Rites

"Zombies have taken over the world and as a commander of Special Forces it's your mission to rescue humanity. Last Rites is a mission-based Doom clone and settled in the future providing you an arsenal of hi-tech weapons. The game's 3D-Engine is on Doom level and has the ability to create large outside and inside levels. One special thing about Ocean Software's game is, that in at least half the missions you have a team of four other commandos with you, who give you covering fire and help you fight the zombies. The game was only released in Europe."

    Lighthouse - The Dark Being

"My "Top Dog" for this game comes with a huge warning: I am biased for difficult games. That said, Lighthouse is the game for you if you, too, are an experienced adventurer who revel in difficult puzzles. Lighthouse is not just hard-- it's also very unforgiving as it'll happily let you advance without all the necessary items. The results of actions you do have to be uncovered most of the time. Still, it's got a great surrealistic story (explore a strange world to find your missing daughter), good length, and did I mention wonderful but difficult puzzles? <G>"  --Underdogs

    Lion

"PC Gamer said it all: "With Wolf, Sanctuary Woods [produced] a roleplaying simulation that detailed the everyday life of wolves in the wild. By challenging the player's skill in hunting, killing, mating, and survival... Lion isn't quite the step beyond Wolf you might expect, but it does have its nice little touches... You can use the long grass to creep up on your prey; vultures circle overhead at the kill site; and your eyes glow a fierce amber in the darkness of the savanna night. This fresh approach to "edutainment" painlessly enlightened us, while entertaining as few games have done before." Definitely the best animal simulations ever made that successfully combine fun, realism, and educational content. Highly recommended!" --Underdogs

Lode Runner Online: The Mad Monks' Revenge

"Lode Runner On-Line: The Mad Monks' Revenge is the new and improved version of Lode Runner: The Legend Returns. Developed and released in 1995 by Presage (now Human Code), makers of The Legend Returns and published by Sierra, it is basically the same game as its predecessor, but with some new features and additional levels. The most notable new feature is the ability to play a 2-player game over a network connection, which is incredibly addictive, especially if you have a willing friend (read: victim) on the other end of the phone line. Other new features are regenerating bombs, disappearing turf, and "personalized" items that can only be used by one of the two players.

It is unfortunate that Sierra decided to name the game Lode Runner On-Line, as this has probably led many people to believe that this is an on-line-only game (similar to Ultima On-Line for example). This is not true; in fact it has every feature that Legend Returns has, and many more. In addition to multiplayer modes, there are more devious levels and more varied background graphics and tile sets that make the level editor much more robust and fun to design new levels with. Overall, if you enjoy Legend Returns, you'll love Lode Runner On-Line at least twice as much. And best of all, Todd Daggert, the lead programmer of this gem, put it up for free download on his Lode Runner Online page in 2002. Two thumbs up, way up!"--Underdogs

    Loom Enhanced CD

"Loom is an epic adventure game from LucasFilm. What sets Loom apart from other adventure games (in direct comparison with Sierra's) is its unique interface: you do not carry items around, but rather manipulate existing items through the use of spells. The spells themselves are woven through playing magical notes on a special distaff. Loom also features three difficultly levels, and differentiates them by changing the way the interface works: Standard features the distaff at the bottom of the screen but notes aren't written, whereas Expert doesn't have the distaff and you have to replay the spells by hearing alone.

In Loom you play the role of Bobbin Threadbare, a young man from the Guild of Weavers who just turned 17. Although you do not know why, you are outcast from the guild and blamed for the lack of prosperity in recent times. After the Council of Elders is attacked and the Elders are turned into swans, you as Bobbin must set forth on a journey to find the swans and try to restore order to the Guild of Weavers." --Moby Games

Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes, The: The Case of the Rose Tattoo

"Arguably the best games starring the world's most famous fictional detective, Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes 1 and 2 are similar: while the plot, writing, graphics, are all first-rate, most puzzles-- especially the just-click-and-watch lab sequences in Serrated Scalpel-- "lead" you to their solutions without requiring much thought. Fortunately the sequel Rose Tattoo boasts better puzzles and graphics, and a much longer plot. Holmes' fans will enjoy untangling both the Jack-the-Ripper-lookalike mystery, and the Diogenes Club bombing in which Holme's brother, Mycroft, is mortally wounded. Despite banal puzzles that hardly merits the attention of the world's foremost detective, the games' well-written plot and faitthful recreation of Holmesian London make the games worthwhile. So come, Watson, the game's afoot!" --Underdogs

Louis Cat Orze: The Mystery Of The Queen's Necklace

"This is a CD-ROM history lesson cleverly designed as a mystery. The Queen's necklace has been stolen, and you, the trusty investigator, have a short six days to track down the thief. The Royal Palace at Versailles is the scene of the crime. Aided by the mischievous Louis Cat Orze, a feline of royal descent if there ever was one, you must explore the palace and the surrounding countryside, listen in on conversations, and occasionally pick a pocket. Louis Cat Orze isn't a free ride, though-fees must be paid, palms greased, and while you begin the game with a certain amount of livres, you have to investigate thoroughly and learn about the era in order to earn more. Or you can try your hand at the Palace Games to increase (or decrease) your purse. Once you think you know the identity of the thief, you can present your accusation to the king - if you can afford to see him, and if you haven't been thrown into the Bastille! It has its share of pitfalls; some of these you learn by doing, and some are buried in the manual (read it completely)."

"Based on the famous comics series about good cowboy Lucky Luke.

In the game you as Lucky Luke have to arrest four Dalton brothers – Averell, William, Jack, and Joe. On your mission you will progress from level to level shooting bad cowboys, jail-breakers, and bad Indians with your revolver; collecting bullets, dynamites, sheriff stars, and other useful items; running, jumping, ducking, and climbing. The locations vary from Forts, Towns, and Jails to Mines, Train, and Saloon with Ghosts. On every level you have to complete different submissions to progress – either to free a Bank Director, or to collect Three Nuggets for Miner to obtain a Nitroglycerine, or to build a Totem for Apaches, etc. At the end of some levels you confront the big boss, it is often the one of Daltons."--Moby Games
