Ubik
 "Based on the
novel UBIK from Philip K. Dick you are playing the main
character from the book, called Joe Chip. You are working for a company
called Runciter Associates in Los Angeles (in the year 2019) and your
job is to protect companies against industrial spying from other
companies. With genetic engineering and the development of replicants
both sides have PSI-powers at hand to reach their targets.
In
the game you lead, train and equip a squad of selected individuals
(with various abilities; be it several kinds of weapon skills or PSI)
through 3D-realtime rendered maps (UBIK may have been the first RTSG
using a 3D engine) where you sometimes can interact with your
environment or even talk to some individuals.
Connecting
those missions are many rendered cinematic cut-scenes (the game ships
on 3 CDs). The game's storyline has several layers of intrigue and
complexity." -- Moby Games

Under
a Killing Moon
 "It's December,
2042. And you're the only P.I. that follows the old
steps of Philip Marlow, Spade, and other classic detectives. This time,
the world depends upon you. How? Why? It's not for me to tell. Take
your gun, and see what'll be next. Well, you'll drop it via the window
accidentally, but I guess that won't stop you from solving the case.
Under
A Killing Moon, unlike the Tex Murphy adventures that came before it,
takes place in a world whose locations are pure 3D in which you have
full maneuverability. You can even look for clues underneath desks,
chairs, etc. Other features include an online hint system (that
decreases your final score the more you use it), extensive support for
additional sound/music devices, and full-motion video technology."

Unlimited Adventures
 "For those who
enjoyed the role-playing games from SSI's AD&D
Gold
Box series, Unlimited Adventures
allows players to create their own similar games. (It is also required
to play games created with it.) It was designed to create fantasy
games, especially those set in the Forgotten Realms world. "
'Art is an important
aspect of any game. UA comes with a lot of art, depicting various
monsters, characters, items etc. but it is possible to import your own
art.
The designer can also edit the monsters. There are a lot
of monsters (such as goblins, dragons or zombies) and humanoid enemies
(brigands, bandits, evil mages etc.) and characters provided by
default, but the designer can change their name, appearance and
attributes." --Moby Games

Utopia
- The Creation of a Nation
 " Utopia takes
the Sim
City
gameplay concept and adds a military element to it. The game is set in
the distant future, where your job is nothing less than Colony
Administrator for a new settlement on some far-flung planet. Your aim
is to provide the highest Quality of Life rating for the colonists.
You
do so by ensuring that there is enough life support, power, housing,
employment, police and entertainment to keep the citizens of your
colony happy. Hindering your goal are random events such as solar
eclipses (which can render your solar panels inactive) and also a
different, hostile alien race that inhabits the planets in the many
scenarios at offer."-- Moby Games

Warcraft
" Warcraft: Orcs & Humans is the first
real-time fantasy strategy game from
Blizzard Entertainment.
By playing either the Humans or the Orcs in this saga, two separate
story lines evolve with 12 scenarios per side telling the tale of the
battle for Azeroth. Players must mine gold and chop wood in order to
construct buildings and create new units. From swords to sorcery, all
the elements of classic fantasy are here to explore: rich forests, dark
dungeons and bubbling swamps await the stalwart troops amassed to fight
for dominance. Command many unique armies and creatures including
Knights, Archers, Clerics, Warlocks, Daemons, Elementals, and
Necromancers who are able to raise the dead.
The multiplayer
aspects of the game allow 2 players to challenge one another on over 20
custom maps and determine who is the supreme warlord. Head to head play
is supported over modem, serial link, and IPX networks, and works
cross-platform between the IBM-PC and Macintosh versions." -- Moby Games

War Wind
"War Wind is a classic real time strategy game in a
medieval fantasy
setting. The game copies both, graphics and interface, from its
successful model, Warcraft 2.
The ancient alien world of Yavaun
teeters on the brink of anarchy. Four diverse races, the Tha'Roon,
Obblinox, Eaggra and the Shama'Li are fighting for dominance on the
planet.
Despite many objects taken directly from the model, War
Wind also introduces many new elements to the genre like the carry-over
of your units from scenario to scenario and advanced combat movements
like stealth modes and bio enhancements.
You can either play one
of the 28 pre-designed scenarios of the game's campaign, play a
multiplayer game or create new scenarios with the included level
editor." -- Moby Games

Webmaster:
Fantastic Adventures in the World of the Internet
"The Dream Wide Web is the environment in which
you find yourself: it's a virtual World Wide Web where the Webmaster
has their homepage, and it's the game's starting point. Despite running
in 256 colour mode, the graphics are rather good with something of a
"Blade Runner" atmosphere with piles of discarded monitors hiding in
the murk, writhing cables and gloomy tunes. Your task is to vanquish
the evil Hacker who has subjugated the inhabitants - now to be found
living underground as Subterraneans, who can be called upon to help if
you post messages on the Newsgroup boards. The Hacker's hench-entities
are Getties, a sneaky and vicious bunch who will do anything for a
chocolate caramel. Pushing these through the door of your CD-ROM drive
is unlikely to help, however. Instead, you must find cards and the card
combinations that let you breach the four firewalls (other combinations
are antidotes for the viruses that come from the swamp) using the
search engine and information centre that are all part of the game. To
move around you use a white glove-shaped cursor that lets you push,
pull, pick things up and generally navigate. It's a tiny bit like
wearing a virtual reality glove, an innovative idea that's easy to
learn, helped by on-screen prompts. This is a novel and potentially
absorbing game, and if you crack all the firewalls and your telephone
bill can stand it, you can choose to play a final online round against
the Hacker." --Legends World

Wild Metal Country
"Wild Metal Country is a action game in which you control
a little tank
(there are five different tanks you can select). Tank-like machines
have gone wild on the three different planets of the Tehric system and
your job is to defeat them (for more about the story, see the
advertising blurb).
The battles take place in desolate mountain
environments. The big difference in altitude play an important role in
the game. In the single player mode you complete levels by collecting 8
colored power cores, which are defended by the machines, and returning
them to one of several hovering stores. The player has an infinite
amount of lives. The weaponry consists of 8 types of missiles and 4
types of mines. You receive help from a pair of helicopters that drop
ammo and can heal you.
It takes some time to get used to the
control scheme. The two tracks of the tank are operated independently
(you can for example make a quick spin by going forward with one track
and backwards with the other). Moreover you can turn the turret in any
direction. The camera always moves with your turret. So you might
actually be driving towards the camera. You can also change the angle
of your turret and the distance your rockets travel. You only use the
keyboard to control your tank.
Noteworthy aspects of the game
are: the physics modelling, the 3D engine and the amount of freedom the
player has (no time constraints etc.)." -- Moby Games

Wolf
"Wolf
is a very cleverly made animal simulation. When I first
played it, I was impressed with the amount of effort the designers had
put into the game to make every aspect interesting. The premise is
quite simple: You are a wolf, part of a pack. In normal simulation
mode, your only goal is to hunt animals for food, avoid humans and
interact with other wolves. This wolf interaction will ultimately lead
to mating, which is very difficult to achieve." --Abandonia

World
of Aden - Thunderscape
 "The original Swords
& Sorcery meets Steam Age Technology
role-playing game (Pre-dating Arcanum by six years). The player
controls a party of up to 6 players drawn from the standard fantasy
races and classes on a quest to prevent the "Darkfall" from engulfing
the world of Aden.
Adventuring takes place in a 3-D world with
characters created using a standard set of attributes, skills, spells,
and equipment that will be familiar to any RPG fan. Thunderscape's
unique addition to the genre was the addition of industrial age
technology including firearms, steam engines, zeppelins, and primitive
robots (steam golems).
Thunderscape was the first World of Aden game released by SSI, the
second (and final) being Entomorph."

Wrath of Earth
 "One of the most
unknown, underrated games ever made, Wrath of Earth
is a fun futuristic FPS with quite a few innovations that are rarely
seen in today's 3D-accelerated games. You play either a male or female
commander who is sent to investigate the chaotic situation at the
Aragon mining colony, where mining robots run rampant, most humans are
dead, and an alien invasion is rumored.
Gameplay is best described as SSI's Cyclones,
except a bit less detailed. You view the gameworld from your bio-suit,
which gives you a plethora of status displays, including 6 separate
gauges that show major statistics, ranging from your health, radiation
level, and armor. Weapons you collect and be viewed in close-up screen,
which gives you detailed statistics, including type of ammo required,
damage power relative to other weapons, etc. Your bio-suit also has
many interesting instruments, including an infrared headlight and
sonar. On-screen crosshairs automatically identify objects and lock on
targets similar to System Shock, except that in Wrath of Earth you
cannot jump or look up or down as the engine is not true 3D. The game
also features many NPCs similar to Strife, guided weapons, and many
well-designed levels, both indoors and out.
Overall, Wrath of Earth
is a solid FPS that is highly recommended to anyone who likes action
games. It unfortunately got very little attention when first released,
owing largely to lack of marketing and shareware status. Two thumbs up,
way up!" --Underdogs

Yellow Brick Road
"Yellow
Brick Road is one of the most obscure adventure games, brilliantly
adapted from L. Frank Baum's venerated children's book, The Wonderful
Wizard of Oz, written in 1899 and published in 1900. The game is
developed by Synergy, a Japanese company, which released many other
obscure titles
including Gadget, Zeddas: Servant of Sheol and not to mention Alice: An
Interactive Museum, using amazing Quicktime technologies. You play as
young Dorothy Gale, who after wearing the enchanted ruby slippers is
magically transported from her Kansas home to this magical world of Oz.
Following the
Yellow Brick Road, you meet the Tin Man, who joins you in your quest to
find your way back home. Next, you free the Cowardly Lion and together
they travel to the Emerald City to find and rescue the Scarecrow from
the captivity of the Evil Witch.
The movement in the game is displayed by nicely created 3D cut-scene.
There are a few combat sequences in this game but they are not so hard
as the game is basically developed with young kids in mind. The puzzles
are quite logical and mostly inventory based. The game music is also
adapted from the movie, The Wizard of Oz, released in 1939. All in all,
Yellow Brick Road is a nice adventure for the whole family."

Zork
- Grand Inquisitor
